The NHL’s four divisions each crown a regular-season winner, and the futures market tracks all of them from the preseason through the final week. Hot streaks, injuries, and games in hand swing these numbers constantly, and a division can flip favorites three or four times before it’s settled.

This page is the record, organized by season and division, with the charts, in-season movement notes, and the final odds. Two seasons need context. In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic ended the regular season in March, and the league graded division titles on the standings at the stoppage. In 2021, the NHL realigned into four temporary divisions, East, Central, West, and the all-Canadian North, to limit border crossings.

2022 Atlantic Division Odds

Tampa Bay opened as the Atlantic favorite, but Florida took over in November and pulled away, closing at -30000.

• [April 1] Florida shortened to -750, though the gap between the Panthers and second-place Toronto was the smallest among the division leaders.

• [February 3] Florida stayed favored, with the Lightning and Leafs behind at +200.
• [January 11] A tight race, with the Panthers, Leafs, and Lightning all top favorites and Florida holding a slight edge at DraftKings.

• [November 30] The Panthers stayed favored, but Toronto’s 12-2 November shortened the Leafs from +375 to +205.

2022 Metropolitan Division Odds

Carolina opened behind the Islanders and Penguins, then seized the Metro by November and held on, closing at -260 over the Rangers.

• [April 19] The Rangers made up ground on Carolina with a 5-2-1 April, climbing to +200 to win the Metro.
• [April 1] With Carolina having nearly sewn up the Metro, the Rangers and Penguins became the battle to watch for home ice.
• [February 23] Carolina took control of the Metro, sitting atop the division and second in the conference in the NHL playoff picture.
• [February 3] The Hurricanes became the odds-on Metro favorite, going 7-2-1 in their last ten into the All-Star break.
• [January 11] Carolina separated from the Capitals and Penguins, listed at +105 with Pittsburgh behind at +330.
• [December 13] Despite a small slump, the Hurricanes remained narrow favorites over the Capitals.
• [November 30] Washington pulled neck and neck with Carolina, improving from +488 to +180.
• [November 10] Carolina became the favorite at +175, with the Islanders second at +425.
• [October 20] Surprisingly, the Penguins were slightly favored a week into the season.
• [October 8] The Metro barely moved since September, with the Islanders a slightly bigger favorite at +308.
• [September 22] The Islanders separated to +410, with the Penguins second at +425.

2022 Central Division Odds

Colorado was the Stanley Cup favorite and opened as a resounding Central favorite, winning the division wire to wire and taking the Western Conference’s regular-season title.

• [April 19] After a win over Carolina, the Avalanche captured the Central Division and the Western Conference regular-season title.
• [April 1] Odds were still posted for other Central teams, but the title essentially belonged to Colorado.
• [February 23] Colorado pulled away from St. Louis and Minnesota, with no one else really contending.
• [February 3] The Avalanche all but locked it up at -500, with the Wild the second favorite at +600.
• [January 11] The Avalanche were resounding favorites, with the Wild and Blues around +600.
• [December 13] Despite the Wild going 8-2 in their last ten, the Avalanche stayed atop the Central.
• [November 30] Colorado remained favored after a slow start, improving from +113 to -170 over November.
• [November 10] Colorado’s slow start worsened them from -223 to +113, while the Blues shortened from +1100 to +330.
• [October 20] The Blues opened with wins over the Avalanche and Coyotes, sitting at +1100.
• [October 8] The Central stayed stagnant four days before the season.
• [September 22] The Avalanche remained heavy favorites, shortening to -235.
• [August 17] The Stanley Cup favorites opened as resounding Central favorites, with the Wild second at +608.

2022 Pacific Division Odds

The Pacific was a scramble. Vegas opened the favorite and Edmonton led in November, but Calgary surged to its first division title since 2018-19, out to -8000 by April.

• [April 19] After opening at +1300, Calgary sat three points from its first division title since 2018-19, and books stopped posting Pacific odds.
• [April 1] With a five-point lead on the Kings and three games in hand, Calgary fully earned its -8000 price.
• [February 23] The Flames took the league by surprise, winning ten straight to become huge Pacific favorites after opening at 11-1.
• [February 3] No movement; Vegas stayed the favorite with the Flames narrowly behind at +200.
• [January 11] The Flames kept nipping at Vegas, but the Golden Knights held the odds-on favorite spot.
• [December 13] With the Flames and Oilers slumping, Vegas reclaimed the favorite’s spot.
• [November 30] A Battle of Alberta brewed, with the Oilers at +145 and the Flames right behind at +170.
• [November 10] Vegas lost favorite status to Edmonton’s hot start, the Oilers shortening from +235 to -123.
• [October 20] After a poor start, Vegas lengthened from -180 to -123, with the Oilers narrowly behind at +235.
• [October 8] Vegas remained a heavy favorite at -180, with the Kraken at +875.
• [September 22] Little movement, with the Golden Knights still favored at -175.
• [August 17] Vegas opened as the odds-on Pacific favorite, with the expansion Kraken at +900.

2021 NHL Division Winner Odds

For 2020-21, the NHL realigned into four temporary divisions because of pandemic travel restrictions. The teams in the East, Central, and West played within their division, while the North was made up entirely of Canadian clubs.

2021 East Division Odds

Pittsburgh won the realigned East. Boston opened as the +250 favorite in December, but the Penguins, a 5/1 opener, clinched it in May.

• [May 10] The Penguins clinched the East after beating Buffalo on May 8. Pittsburgh had opened at 5/1 back in December.
• [May 4] The Capitals and Penguins were tied at 71 points, but Washington was favored at -145 with a game in hand. Pittsburgh sat at +250.
• [April 22] Washington and the Islanders were tied at 62 points, the Caps holding a small edge at +195 to the Islanders’ +260.
• [April 15] The title was still up for grabs. Washington led at +168, with the Penguins four points back and the Islanders two back.
• [April 2] The Capitals overtook the Islanders at +180, while the Flyers climbed to +7000 amid a rough March.
• [March 24] As Pittsburgh and Philadelphia fought for the final playoff spot, the Flyers’ slump lengthened them from +833 to +2567.
• [March 15] The Islanders went 9-0-1 in their last ten, moving from +483 to +187 to become the favorite.
• [March 5] The Capitals got some goaltending help and ripped off four straight wins, shortening from +850 to +383.
• [February 25] The Islanders won four of six, shortening from +1400 to +783 over two weeks.
• [February 18] The Capitals went 1-4 in their last five, drifting from +400 to +817.
• [February 9] The Bruins started to become runaway favorites, shortening from +217 to +125.
• [February 3] The Sabres fell fast after a 4-4-2 start, holding the longest odds in the East at +2067.
• [January 29] The Rangers jumped from +800 to +1633, sitting last in the East at 2-4-1.
• [January 19] After a shaky start, the Penguins drifted from +408 to +523.
• [January 11] The Flyers climbed to +408 while the Penguins shortened from +450 to +408.
• [December 22] The Bruins opened as +250 favorites, with the Flyers right behind at +300.

2021 North Division Odds

Toronto controlled the all-Canadian North almost wire to wire, opening at +150 and winning the division.

• [May 10] After leading nearly the entire season, the Leafs won the North. Toronto had opened at +150 in December 2020.
• [May 4] The Leafs held an eight-point lead on Edmonton at -10000, with the Oilers out to +1400.
• [April 22] Winnipeg closed within four points, pushing the Leafs from -725 to -500.
• [April 15] Barring an insane Jets run, the Leafs had it locked at -725, with Winnipeg at +775.
• [April 2] The Leafs shrank to -220, while Montreal kept pushing, shortening from +500 to +475.
• [March 24] Edmonton turned it on, shortening from +967 to +483, tied with Toronto but trailing on games in hand.
• [March 15] The Jets fought back to +358 while the Leafs lengthened from -485 to -295.
• [March 5] The Leafs became massive favorites, winning four of five to shorten from -272 to -485.
• [February 25] Montreal slumped to 1-3-2 over six games, drifting from +165 to +517.
• [February 18] The North became a two-team race, with Calgary third after lengthening from +850 to +1133.
• [February 9] Vancouver kept struggling, drifting from +1533 to +2200.
• [February 3] Montreal went 7-1-2 to become the North favorite at +133.
• [January 29] With the NHL’s worst record at 1-6-1, Ottawa drifted from +4200 to +6533.
• [January 19] Oddsmakers pegged it a two-team race between Montreal and Toronto, with Edmonton jumping from +453 to +617.
• [January 11] Montreal shortened significantly to +453 over the prior few weeks.
• [December 22] The Leafs opened as favorites to win the all-Canadian division at +150, with Edmonton next at +275.

2021 Central Division Odds

Carolina took the realigned Central as the #1 seed. Tampa Bay opened the +150 favorite, with the Hurricanes second at +350 before pulling clear.

• [May 10] The Hurricanes had opened as the second favorite at +350 in December 2020 and only got shorter from there.
• [May 4] Carolina held a two-point lead with two games in hand on Florida, heading toward the playoffs as the Central’s #1 seed.
• [April 22] Carolina took a big lead, shortening from +112 to -217, while the Lightning drifted from +122 to +350.
• [April 15] The Lightning, Hurricanes, and Panthers were tied at 58 points. Tampa drifted from -169 to +122, while Carolina shortened from +215 to +112.
• [April 2] The Lightning were tied with Florida at 52 points atop the Central, with Carolina the second favorite at +215.
• [March 24] The Lightning kept shortening as they dominated, moving from -153 to -220.
• [March 15] Florida shortened from +500 to +394, holding the third playoff spot behind Tampa and Carolina.
• [March 5] Columbus drifted from +3667 to +8167 after losing five of seven.
• [February 25] Florida led the division at 12-4-2, sitting at +450 to win the Central.
• [February 18] Chicago went 7-1-1 over nine games, dropping from +4933 to +2933.
• [February 9] The Predators struggled at 5-7, drifting from +950 to +2133.
• [February 3] After a 5-0-1 start, Florida shortened from +1000 to +767.
• [January 29] With Dallas finally underway, the Stars shortened from +567 to +433.
• [January 19] The absences of Toews and Dach hurt Chicago, which drifted from +2167 to +3933 after an 0-3 start.
• [January 11] Nashville drifted from +600 to +767 just before opening night.
• [December 22] The Lightning opened as the Central favorite at +150, with Carolina trailing at +350.

2021 West Division Odds

Vegas edged Colorado in the West. The Avalanche opened the +180 favorite and Vegas +200, with the Knights finishing on a four-point cushion.

• [May 10] Vegas held a four-point lead on Colorado late, listed at -335 at DraftKings while the Avalanche climbed to +250.
• [May 4] Colorado remained the DraftKings favorite, but on average Vegas was the -220 favorite. The Avs had a game in hand but trailed by two points.
• [April 22] Despite a four-point lead, Vegas was second on average at +130, with Colorado the favorite at -165 having played three fewer games.
• [April 15] The Avalanche held a four-point lead, shortening from -158 to -250, while Vegas drifted from +133 to +205.
• [April 2] Colorado overtook Vegas at -158, with the Knights drifting from -131 to +133 and the Wild third at +1000.
• [March 24] Vegas led, but the final playoff spot was open. The Kings drifted to +7667 while the Blues at +2433 held the edge.
• [March 15] Vegas overtook the Avalanche again, shortening from +112 to -102.
• [March 5] Minnesota turned it on, winning five of seven to shorten from +2167 to +400.
• [February 25] The Kings won six straight, shortening from +5867 to +2300.
• [February 18] Vegas overtook Colorado as favorite, shortening from +150 to +137.

2020 NHL Division Winner Odds

The 2019-20 regular season ended in March when the pandemic hit. In late May, commissioner Gary Bettman declared the season over, and most books graded division titles on the standings at the stoppage: Boston (Atlantic), Washington (Metro), St. Louis (Central), and Vegas (Pacific). The tables below reflect the final March 10 odds.

2020 Atlantic Division Odds

Boston led the Atlantic when the season stopped. Tampa Bay opened as the favorite to repeat, but the Bruins built a big lead and sat at -850 in March.

• [March 10] The Bruins re-opened a six-point lead over Tampa, back to prohibitively short -1050 favorites.
• [February 20] Still neck and neck, with Tampa’s odds (-115) catching up to Boston’s (-130).
• [February 10] The Bolts (+130) crept closer, three points back with a game in hand on the Bruins (-188).
• [January 22] If Tampa won its games in hand it would be two points back, which dragged Boston to -190.
• [January 9] Boston’s lead was down to seven over Tampa, and the Lightning had two games in hand, improving to +300.
• [December 16] Preseason favorite Tampa kept sliding to +630, though it held the second-best odds.
• [December 5] Boston held a 14-point lead, its -380 odds implying a 79% chance to win.
• [November 21] Toronto’s odds cratered during the six-game skid that got Mike Babcock fired, falling from +400 to +880.
• [November 14] Three straight losses brought Boston (+150) back to the pack, while Montreal surged to +1200.
• [November 7] Boston was near even money (+120) on a three-point lead with games in hand.
• [October 29] The Leafs sank to +580, while the Bruins (+460) nearly caught the Lightning (+420).
• [October 23] An 8-1-1 start pushed the Sabres (+730) past the Panthers (+1400) into the top four.
• [October 7] Toronto (+220) inched closer to Tampa (+150) atop the Atlantic.
• [October 1] The Panthers kept rising, from +760 to +700 on the eve of the season.
• [August 27] Buffalo was the biggest Atlantic mover, from +7500 in mid-July to +5600.
• [August 9] Tampa kept leading, but Florida became a legitimate threat at +760.
• [July 15] Tampa was a sizable favorite to repeat (+130), even with Toronto adding Tyson Barrie.

2020 Metro Division Odds

The Metro was a season-long scramble. Washington led at the March stoppage at +145, just ahead of a surging Philadelphia.

• [March 10] A 9-1 stretch put the Flyers (+140) in the mix, second only to Washington (+128).
• [February 20] The Penguins took the division lead and became the favorite for the first time all year at -142.
• [February 10] The Penguins (+155) held steady, effectively two points behind Washington (-178).
• [January 22] Pittsburgh closed to four points back, improving from +533 to +245.
• [January 9] Pittsburgh (+533) leapfrogged the Islanders (+667), but the Caps (-317) kept getting shorter.
• [December 16] The Penguins jumped to +830 on strong play without Sidney Crosby.
• [December 5] The Capitals (-170) went shorter than even money for the first time, leading the division by nine points.
• [November 21] Despite poor underlying metrics, the Islanders kept winning, shortening in turn from +270 to +170.
• [November 14] A Crosby injury sent the Penguins from +510 to +630, while the Flyers improved from +2000 to +820.
• [November 8] The Caps and Islanders were level in the standings, but Washington held the edge in the odds (+160 vs +350).
• [October 29] The Islanders’ seven-game win streak moved them from +680 to +350.
• [October 23] The three preseason favorites (Capitals, Hurricanes, Penguins) sat 1-2-3 early and all shortened.
• [October 7] Washington (+270) and Carolina (+350) separated after a strong first week.
• [October 1] The Capitals became clear favorites, from +350 to +310, with Carolina next at +430.
• [August 27] The Penguins (+440) and Hurricanes (+450) were neck and neck for second, narrowly ahead of Washington (+350).
• [August 9] The Capitals took sole possession of first, from +400 to +350, with Pittsburgh improving from +550 to +440.
• [July 15] Re-signing Sebastian Aho gave Carolina a boost, tied with Washington atop the first Metro odds at +400.

2020 Central Division Odds

A two-team race to the line. St. Louis (-110) and Colorado (-105) were neck and neck when play stopped, with the Blues holding the standings edge.

• [March 10] The Blues (-110) and Avalanche (+105) stayed neck and neck. St. Louis was two points up, but Colorado had a game in hand.
• [February 20] Colorado sat a point back of St. Louis and Dallas but had a game in hand and a division-best +44 goal differential, making the Avs the favorites at -120.
• [February 10] The Avalanche (+138) could retake the lead by winning their two games in hand on St. Louis (-125).
• [January 22] St. Louis hit -210, the shortest any Central team had been all season.
• [January 9] The Blues owned a seven-point lead and were shorter than even money at -117 just past the halfway mark.
• [December 16] An 8-1-1 stretch put the Avalanche alone atop the standings at +140, well ahead of the Blues (+280).
• [December 5] The Wild (+2200) made the biggest gains, earning points in ten straight (7-0-3).
• [November 21] The Jets (+530) made big gains on a 7-2-1 stretch.
• [November 14] The Blues became favorites at +175 on a red-hot 8-1-1 run.
• [November 8] The injury-riddled Avalanche fell sharply from +140 to +250, behind new favorite Nashville (+160).
• [October 29] Despite injuries to Mikko Rantanen and Gabe Landeskog, the Avs stayed heavy favorites at +140.
• [October 23] Colorado neared odds-on status (+140) after a 7-1-1 start.
• [October 7] Colorado lived up to its billing, improving to +220, with the Blues at +360.
• [October 1] The Avalanche were the consensus favorites at +290, though Dallas (+390) led at some books.
• [August 27] No real changes: a tightly packed top five, the Blackhawks at +790, then a big drop to the Wild (+4200).
• [August 9] Plenty of love for Colorado, already favored and getting shorter in the competitive Central, from +350 to +300.
• [July 15] A deep playoff run plus the addition of Nazem Kadri gave Colorado the best Central odds to start.

2020 Pacific Division Odds

Vegas came on late. After a slow start, the Knights surged to a three-point lead and -225 odds by March, with Edmonton second.

• [March 10] Vegas built a three-point lead over the Oilers, sending its odds from +175 all the way to -238.
• [February 20] Vegas finally played to expectations, going 6-3-1 in its last ten and grabbing the best Pacific odds at +175, one point out of first.
• [February 10] Some separation appeared, with the Canucks (+250), Oilers (+350), and Knights (+225) ahead of the Flames (+500) and Coyotes (+675).
• [January 22] The Canucks (+325) sat second, just behind Vegas (+313), but five teams were between +300 and +400.
• [January 9] The top five were separated by four points, yet Vegas (+132) and Arizona (+250) were heavily favored.
• [December 16] The Coyotes (+240) sat just behind Vegas (+200), a point up in the standings with a game in hand.
• [December 5] The Sharks (+600) surged ahead of Vancouver (+700) and Calgary (+1300).
• [November 21] The Oilers (+310) and Coyotes (+320) kept inching toward the declining Golden Knights (+220).
• [November 14] Vegas’s slow start continued, sliding from +110 to +150.
• [November 8] The Canucks improved sharply from +1100 to +500, second only to Vegas (+110).

• [August 9] Vegas drew all the early action, down to even money, while the Sharks lengthened from +380 to +540.
