UNC forced this do-or-die matchup with a 6-2 victory Sunday afternoon. The Tar Heels fell behind 2-0 in the opening frame, but then held the Sooners scoreless over the remaining 8 innings. That’s the first time that’s happened to the OU bats since March 19th, while their 2-run total was their lowest output since May 19. The loss also snapped their 9-game winning streak, and it’s fair to wonder how they’ll bounce back from the Game 2 defeat.
The Sooners have captivated the College Baseball world with their Cinderella Run, sweeping the Regionals, Super Regionals and first four games of the CWS. But let’s not forget, this was not a team expected to make noise in the College World Series odds. They had a losing record in conference play, dropped their final four SEC series, and were one-and-done in the conference tournament. They’ve been relying on a trio of freshman starters, and they’ll trot out another one tonight.
That honor belongs to Nick Wesloski, who hasn’t exactly shined in his past few outings. Wesloski has yielded 13 runs in his past 17.1 innings, and after using seven different arms in yesterday’s loss, the Sooners pitching cupboard isn’t exactly stacked behind him.
That spells trouble against one of the best lineups in the nation. UNC hits for average and power, and is extremely patient. All of those traits were on display in Game 2, as they pounded 8 hits, clubbed 2 home runs, and drew 9 walks. This team is always on the base and their disciplined approach wears down opposing arms.
As for their own pitching situation, they are the much fresher staff. The Tar Heels used only two pitchers in Game 2, including freshman phenom Caden Glauber, who struck out 8 batters over 5 scoreless innings. UNC improved to a staggering 29-0 in games that Glauber has pitched in, and after only throwing 65 pitches yesterday, North Carolina isn’t ruling out using him again today for an inning or two.
As for their starting situation, the first two arms up are likely some combination of Folger Boaz and Jackson Rose. Both have been trusted back end starters all season, helping the Tar Heels boast a 3.89 ERA, the eighth best mark in the country.
With the advantage on the mound and Oklahoma potentially reeling, I’m comfortably backing North Carolina tonight. UNC is the more efficient offense and the more talented program, as evident by the fact that they were the National Champion favorites prior to Super Regionals. The Sooners have had a fairy tale run, but the clock will strike midnight this evening, paving the way for the Tar Heels’ first National Title.
