The market sees the Dodgers as the favorites (40¢) to land Skubal before the 2027 MLB season, though they could also sign him as a free agent in the winter. That’s why they did last winter when they signed Kyle Tucker and Edwin Díaz. But the Dodgers aren’t expected to be in the mix for Skubal before the deadline. As they are, they’re already massive World Series odds favorites.

The Brewers (19¢) are listed as second favorites, and while they have the prospects to get a deal done, they’re not a team known for making big splashes ahead of the trade deadline. That leaves us with three other options worth considering. He could join the Tampa Bay Rays (11¢), the Chicago Cubs (9¢), or the Atlanta Braves (7¢).

Out of those three teams, the Cubs seem like the best option to get him. They have young players ready to contribute at the MLB level, such as Matt Shaw and Kevin Alcantara, young pitchers, and several interesting prospects that could entice Detroit to make a deal. The Cubs are built to compete in the National League, and adding Skubal to their rotation would be a huge boost as the team desperately needs a No. 1 starter if they want to make a deep playoff run.

Skubal is widely considered the best pitcher in the majors when healthy, and the numbers back him up. The star left-hander owns a 2.70 ERA with a 0.92 WHIP and 110:13 K:BB across 15 starts and 90 innings in 2026.

Plus, this is his fourth consecutive season with an ERA below 2.80 and a WHIP under 0.95. Simply put, he’s the best starter available and an absolute game-changer on the mound. It’s not surprising to see Skubal sitting near the top of the Cy Young odds with the way he’s been pitching in 2026 when available.

2026 MLB Trade Deadline: Why The Tigers Would Trade Tarik Skubal?

Making sense of what the Tigers will do at the deadline is puzzling, to say the least. They enter Tuesday’s slate holding a 50-57 record, although their +25 run differential ranks fifth in the American League. The Tigers are just 4.0 games away from the final spot in the AL Wild Card race. With that in mind, it doesn’t make much sense to part ways with their best player, especially if he’s set to hit the open market anyway this winter.

Their record and overall play indicate they could very well be sellers, but the presence of Tarik Skubal atop their rotation and the mediocrity of the American League Wild Card suggest they could still sneak into the playoffs if they add a few pieces to round out the roster, as long as Skubal stays healthy.

If he stays in Detroit, he could give the Tigers a real shot at staying in the AL Wild Card and maybe pull an upset in the playoffs. But if he joins one of the contending teams above, the outlook of his potential future team changes drastically.
