Week 1 of the 2026 college football season wraps up with a fascinating ACC clash as the No. 19 SMU Mustangs invade Tallahassee to battle the Florida State Seminoles.

Florida State opened its season with a sturdy victory over New Mexico, while the Mustangs make their debut in 2026.

From a betting perspective, this contest offers a captivating dynamic, as the ranked road team is laying points in the College Football odds, in a hostile environment against a home underdog itching for an upset.

Kickoff is set for Monday, September 7 at 7:30pm ET under the prime-time lights at Bobby Bowden Field at Doak Campbell Stadium. The game will be broadcast nationally on ESPN.

SMU vs Florida State Prediction

  • Score prediction: SMU 31, Florida State 27.

My early lean is SMU -3, with the Mustangs’ passing game doing just enough late to cover a tight number in Tallahassee.

SMU has not played a 2026 game yet, so the table below uses the Mustangs’ 2025 season stats against Florida State’s Week 1 opener.

StatisticSMU (2025 stats)Florida State (2026 opener)
Points Scored36.2 PPG34
Total Yards443.0 YPG419
Passing Yards279.0 YPG202
Rushing Yards164.0 YPG217
Third Down Offense44.0%57.1%
Red Zone Offense88.0%100.0%
Points Allowed22.6 PPG17
Total Yards Allowed337.0 YPG319

Florida State showcased a balanced attack in its opener, generating 419 total yards with 217 on the ground and 202 through the air. The Seminoles also finished drives efficiently, posting a 100.0% red-zone conversion rate and converting 57.1% of their third downs.

Defensively, Florida State allowed 17 points and 319 total yards while racking up three sacks. That was a sturdy opening performance, but the matchup still turns on whether the Seminoles can hold up against an SMU offense that carried high-end passing efficiency and scoring punch last season.

Oddsmakers anticipate a mismatch favoring the SMU air raid offense. Quarterback Kevin Jennings has a passing yards total of 264.5, signaling expected success against this defense. In contrast, Florida State quarterback Ashton Daniels is projected for a quieter evening, with his passing yards set at 217.5.

SMU vs Florida State Line

Odds as of September 2. Get a bet365 bonus code to wager on all college football games.

The current betting lines show clear respect for the road favorites. SMU is laying 2.5 points against the spread at bet365. If you prefer to bypass the points entirely, you can grab SMU on the moneyline at a sturdy -143 price tag, courtesy BetMGM, while Florida State offers a +136 return to defend its home turf over at DraftKings.

SMU carries a 59.0% implied probability to win outright, leaving Florida State with a 41.0% chance to pull off the upset.

To put the moneyline payouts into perspective, a $10 wager on SMU at -159 yields a total payout of $16.29 (a $6.29 profit). Alternatively, placing that same $10 on Florida State at +134 would return $23.40 (a $13.40 profit) if the home dogs emerge victorious.

As for the total, a staggering 75.21% of the money is riding on the Over, supported by 69.5% of the tickets. The Under has drawn just 24.79% of the handle. When evaluating splits, I lean heavily on the money percentages to see where the largest wagers are landing. Bettors are overwhelmingly unified in projecting a high-scoring affair.

SMU vs Florida State Expert Picks

SMU -3 (-110 at BetMGM): From a value perspective, taking the road team to cover a field goal is my strongest spread angle. Laying -159 on the moneyline carries steep juice, but grabbing SMU at -110 to win by more than three points aligns with the talent discrepancy under center. I expect SMU’s 2025 offense to translate well enough against an FSU defense that still allowed 319 yards in its opener.

Over 53.5 Points (-108 at bet365): This total opened at 52.5 and has climbed a full point for good reason. Florida State already showed a balanced offense, and SMU’s market projection points to a productive passing game. The Over is priced at a favorable -108, indicating bookmakers expect an offensive tempo that pushes past this threshold.

Kevin Jennings Over 1.5 Passing TDs (-144 at FanDuel): My favorite player prop on the board focuses on the SMU pocket presence. Jennings is a sizable favorite to toss at least two touchdowns, with the juice shaded to -144 on the Over. Meanwhile, his counterpart Ashton Daniels sees his Under 1.5 passing touchdowns juiced to -215. The numbers point to SMU generating multiple scoring chances through the air.

Kendrick Raphael Anytime TD Scorer (-170 at FanDuel): To round out my betting card, I am backing the SMU running back to find the end zone. At -170, the odds represent significant confidence from the market that Raphael will capitalize on crucial goal-line touches.
