The stakes don’t get much higher for a non-conference showdown as No. 1 Ohio State travels to Austin to face No. 4 Texas. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 PM ET on September 12, 2026, under the lights at DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium.
Both elite programs enter this heavily anticipated clash off 50-point wins over in-state Group of Six schools. Both rosters are on the shortlist for most talented in the country, and the coaching battle between Ryan Day and Steve Sarkisian is among the best possible matchups.
With a close line separating the teams, sustaining drives could be as important as producing explosive plays. That contrast in offensive efficiency is central to my handicap.
Below are my Ohio State vs Texas prediction, picks and updated odds for Saturday’s matchup.
Ohio State vs Texas Prediction
Prediction: Texas 31, Ohio State 27.
When evaluating a matchup with lines this razor-thin, leaning into the game environment is crucial. The biggest mismatch in this game stems from the sheer passing volume both offenses deploy. Ohio State has racked up a staggering 671 total yards, heavily driven by 434 passing yards. Texas is close behind, hanging 59 points on the board with 516 total yards and 360 yards through the air.
While both teams can move the chains at will, they do so in slightly different ways. Texas operates with ruthless efficiency to sustain drives, boasting an incredible 73.3% third down conversion rate compared to a 45.5% mark for Ohio State. Conversely, Ohio State maximizes its scoring opportunities perfectly, boasting a 100.0% red zone efficiency mark, while Texas sits at a still-impressive 85.7%.
At the center of this offensive clash are two highly touted quarterbacks who are fully expected to air it out. Texas signal-caller Arch Manning is tasked with guiding an elite third-down offense. When looking downfield, he will frequently target wide receiver Ryan Wingo to stretch the field.
On the opposing sideline, Ohio State quarterback Julian Sayin will aim to dissect an untested Texas secondary. He will undoubtedly lean heavily on star wideout Jeremiah Smith, who enters the game with an aggressive receiving yards prop of 83.5. Given the explosive nature of both offenses—combining for 115 points scored and nearly 800 passing yards on the young season—I forecast a high-scoring shootout where the home Longhorns ultimately secure the win.
Last season, Ohio State won 14-7 in a Week 1 affair. I feel that game was artificially low-scoring because it was the first big start for both Sayin and Manning. Additionally, neither team had a warm-up match to fix any deficiencies as they did this season. With two experienced quarterbacks and two locked-in squads, I expect more points.
Ohio State vs Texas Picks
Pick: Texas Moneyline (-121)
In what is essentially a pick’em scenario, backing the home team simply to win outright removes the worry of a one-point margin ruining a spread bet. Given the electric atmosphere expected for this high-profile clash, Texas possesses a slight edge. I am passing on the points and pulling the trigger on the moneyline.
Pick: Over 49.5 Points (-112)
The player prop markets suggest a highly productive day through the air. With two high-upside offenses ready to trade blows, the total is well-positioned to eclipse the 49.5-point mark. Both quarterbacks have passing touchdown lines set at 1.5, indicating bookmakers expect multiple scores from both passing attacks. I expect offensive fireworks from the opening kickoff.
Pick: Arch Manning Over 247.5 Passing Yards (-115)
Arch Manning is projected to carry the offensive load for Texas. Given that the game script projects a tight, back-and-forth contest that will likely push both teams to keep their foot on the gas offensively in the second half, Manning should have ample volume to hit this number. For those looking for more college football player props, backing Manning’s volume in a projected shootout is the meat and potatoes of my card.
Ohio State vs Texas Updated Odds
Odds as of September 12, 2026, at 4:13 PM ET, from Caesars.
The updated Ohio State vs Texas odds confirm that oddsmakers view this heavyweight non-conference clash as a near toss-up. Texas is positioned as a slight 1.5-point favorite on its home turf, backed by a -127 moneyline. Ohio State enters as a razor-thin road underdog at +108 to win outright. Meanwhile, the game total of 50.5 points suggests expectations of a back-and-forth, relatively high-scoring affair.
To get a clearer picture of the true win probability without the sportsbook’s vig, I normalized the moneyline odds. The implied win probability for Texas at -127 sits at 55.95%, while Ohio State carries a 48.08% implied probability at +108. Removing the juice gives Texas a 52.4% normalized probability of securing the victory, leaving Ohio State with a 47.6% chance to leave Austin with a win.
For bettors looking to back an outright winner, a $20 bet on the favored Texas moneyline at -127 odds would yield a profit of $15.75, resulting in a total payout of $35.75. Conversely, placing that same $20 wager on the underdog Ohio State at +101 would return a $21.60 profit for a total payout of $41.60. You can start betting at Caesars now or explore other options, but the math points toward the home side.
Ohio State vs Texas Team Stats
Evaluating the early-season data provides a clear picture of exactly what each roster brings to the table. Below is a breakdown of the key statistics for both programs through the young 2026 regular season.
As the numbers show, both defensive units have been impenetrable through one game. However, the gaudy offensive yardage totals illustrate the severe mismatch these previously untested defenses will face. I am particularly focused on the third down efficiency gap; Texas extending drives at a 73.3% clip is a massive advantage in keeping a potent Ohio State offense parked on the sidelines.
Ohio State vs Texas Betting Splits
As I lock in my card for this heavyweight clash, looking at how the betting market is attacking the board provides valuable context. Interestingly, there are no extreme sharp versus public divides where at least 60% of the tickets back one side while 60% or more of the money backs the opposite side.
However, bettors are in lockstep with my official recommendation of the Over. The public is expecting an offensive showcase, with 69.37% of the betting tickets siding with the Over. More importantly, the larger wagers agree, as 72.27% of the money is staked on a high-scoring affair. When both metrics clear the 70% threshold in handle, it reinforces my read on this matchup’s air raid potential.
In the spread market, Ohio State is absorbing the brunt of the action. The Buckeyes have commanded 60.89% of the betting slips and an even stronger 63.93% of the overall money. Bettors are evidently drawn to grabbing the points with the road underdog in what is functionally a toss-up game. This heavy influx of spread money perfectly illustrates why avoiding the points and taking the Texas moneyline is my preferred angle.
