I’m backing North Dakota State to cover, with Sacramento State’s latest performance providing the strongest reason to lay the points. Fresno State gained 542 yards in its 49-3 win over the Hornets. Sacramento State will need a substantial improvement on both sides of the ball to avoid another difficult night.

North Dakota State has averaged 373.3 yards through three games. The offense has not depended entirely on one player: Nathan Hayes is averaging 199.3 passing yards per game and has accounted for seven total touchdowns. That gives the Bison a passing threat to complement their running game.

Myles Mitchell has averaged 60 rushing yards per game, while Scott has averaged 48.3. Each has two rushing touchdowns through three games. Sharing that production matters when a favorite needs to maintain its offense beyond the opening possessions rather than simply establish an early lead.

The Air Force result also supplies a clear warning. North Dakota State led 35-13 in the third quarter but finished with only a six-point victory. A similar finish would be a problem for this spread, so I would not describe that win as an effortless performance from start to finish.

The Bison must still finish more cleanly than they did against Air Force. Long Sacramento State possessions or a late touchdown could erase a cover even if North Dakota State controls most of the game. That is the central risk with laying 27.5 points away from home.
