A dream start to the season for the New York Giants turned nightmarish in the course of one play on Monday night. Starting QB Jaxson Dart went down with a knee injury in the first quarter of a 28-6 loss to the Rams, and his MRI on Tuesday revealed significant damage.

It’s still unclear how long he’ll be out, but even the most-optimistic prognoses at this point indicate an “extended” absence. The least-optimistic: season-ending surgery.

New York started the new campaign with an impressive 28-20 win over the Cowboys as 2.5-point home underdogs. Dart was electric, going 23-of-29 for 230 yards, three TDs, no picks, and a 134.2 passer rating. The win sent NYG’s win total at Kalshi from 8.5 to 9.5. But, on Tuesday, the NFL win totals showed a precipitous drop for the G-Men.

At prediction site Kalshi, NYG’s default win total is now 4.5 with the over (a.k.a. yes on 5+ wins) most-recently trading at just 44 cents, down a full 30 cents from earlier in the day and down from a high of 88 cents.

In the Super Bowl odds, the Giants faded from 3 cents to less than 1 cent.

Who Will Takeover at QB for Giants with Dart Out?

New York Giants turn to veteran quarterback Jameis Winston as their primary starter, with Jake Haener and Brandon Allen serving on the active quarterback depth chart.

Winston, now in his 11th NFL season, threw 27 passes in relief of Dart in the loss to Los Angeles on Monday. He completed just 11 of those attempts (40.8%) while tossing one pick and orchestrating zero touchdown drives. He was also sacked twice.

Dart’s biggest asset in Brian Daboll’s offense was his dynamic dual-threat capability – in 2025, Dart rushed for 539 yards and 10 touchdowns, forcing defenses to account for zone-read keepers and off-script scrambling.

Winston is a traditional, stationary pocket passer (career rushing average under 3.5 YPC). The Giants will inevitably lose the option for designed QB runs and perimeter escape ability, requiring the offensive line to hold up in traditional pass protection.

The steep drop in NYG’s win total reflects the loss of Dart’s high offensive floor and rushing upside. With Winston under center, the Giants’ baseline efficiency drops significantly against aggressive pass-rushing defenses.

Expect Daboll to lean more heavily on running back Tyrone Tracy Jr and quick-strike horizontal concepts to mitigate Winston’s turnover risk.
