Manchester City Premier League Title Odds Plummet After Being Found Guilty on 114 Charges

Manchester City’s Premier League title odds plummeted on prediction markets and online sportsbooks Friday after it was announced the club had been found guilty on 114 of their 115 charges related to financial breaches.

No punishment has been levied, and City plans to appeal the ruling, but their price to win the Premier League at Polymarket dropped from as high as 48% this morning to 31% within minutes of the initial ruling. At Kalshi, it dropped $0.10 upon the news.

Manchester City Found Guilty on 114 Premier League Charges

Charges based on alleged financial breaches from 2009 through 2018 have been looming for Manchester City since they were brought in 2023.

The club was accused of not providing accurate information regarding payments to player and coaches, as well as breaches of the UEFA financial fair play regulations and the Premier League’s profitability and sustainability rules.

There were 115 chargers total, and on Friday it was found guilty of 114 of those.

Under the ownership of Sheik Mansour and the Abu Dhabi United Group, City has become the biggest force in the Premier League, winning eight league titles, four FA Cups, seven League Cups and a Champions League title all since 2008.

It had won just two English top-flight titles in its history prior to that.

Man City EPL Title Odds Crash After Verdict

Traders and sportsbooks immediately reacted to the news, with Polymarket users having the most severe reaction.

City was was the favorite to win the Premier League title Friday morning at Polymarket, but its trades dropped more than 15% as soon as the news was reported.

At DraftKings sportsbook, City’s title odds were +125 at the beginning of the week, but were up to +200 on Friday. This, despite no games being played, and no injuries to report from the international break.

City is 5-0 on the season, and its 15 points are three ahead of defending champion Arsenal.

What’s Next for Manchester City?

Now that it has been found guilty, the question turns to what the punishment will be for Manchester City.

Points deductions are common punishments in these instances, hence the trading and and odds changes on City’s title chances. The Premier League race figures to be tight, so any points deduction could be the difference.

But being found guilty of 114 charges has some pundits and fans thinking the deduction could be enough to relegate City out of the Premier League and into the Championship. That, of course, could cause a mass exodus of star players like Erling Haaland, one of the brightest young stars in the sport.

City is planning to appeal Friday’s ruling, so punishment will at least be delayed.
