The New York Rangers (6-2-0) cross the Hudson to face the New Jersey Devils (3-3-0) tonight at Prudential Center. New York beat Tampa Bay 4-1 in its last game and has been one of the best defensive teams in the league early on. New Jersey won a 5-4 overtime thriller against Detroit most recently but has been inconsistent through six games.
Alexis Lafreniere leads the Rangers with 10 points (7 goals, 3 assists) in eight games, including seven goals in his last five. Jack Hughes has eight points (2 goals, 6 assists) and 25 shots through six games for the Devils.
Puck drop is at 7 pm ET. Here are my Rangers vs Devils prediction, rivalry odds and best bet for Oct. 15.
Rangers vs Devils Prediction & Best Bet
- Rangers moneyline (+125 at BetMGM)
My Rangers vs Devils prediction is on New York as a road underdog. The Rangers are playing like a Stanley Cup odds contender. They’ve allowed just 14 goals in eight games (1.75 per game) and their penalty kill is at 91.7%. That defensive foundation has been the backbone of their 6-2 start and should travel well across the river.
New Jersey generates massive shot volume at 36.3 per game (218 total shots in six games), but the Devils have allowed 22 goals in six contests (3.67 per game). Their penalty kill is at 70.6%, which is a concern against a Rangers power play converting at 21.7%. At 45 cents on prediction market apps, the Rangers are priced as +120 underdogs, but BetMGM is offering a slightly better payout on a New York win at +125 odds. The defensive gap makes that price appealing.
Lafreniere meanwhile, has been on a tear with seven goals in his last five games. Hughes had a goal, two assists and eight shots in his most recent outing against Detroit. Both teams have offensive talent, but New York’s defensive structure (14 goals allowed in eight games vs New Jersey’s 22 in six) is the edge that makes the underdog price worthwhile. Neither team has confirmed its starting goaltender. New users can grab the BetMGM promo code to bet on tonight’s rivalry game.
Rangers vs Devils Team Stats
The Rangers vs Devils team stats highlight a clash of styles. New Jersey generates far more raw shot volume (218 shots for in six games vs 186 in eight for New York), but the Devils aren’t converting those chances efficiently. The Rangers score 3.38 goals per game on just 23.3 shots, while New Jersey manages 2.67 on 36.3.
The special teams gap is the defining factor. New York’s 91.7% penalty kill will be tested by New Jersey’s 23.8% power play, but the Rangers have shown they can defend shorthanded situations at an exceptional rate. New Jersey’s 70.6% penalty kill going against a 21.7% Rangers power play is the more exploitable mismatch.

The Rangers vs Devils rivalry odds have New Jersey as a -149 home favorite, which is far too steep given New York’s start. The total is set at 6.0 with the over at -115 and the under at -105.
