Elks Return to CFL Western Final to Face Rival Lions

It’s been a long time coming, but the Edmonton Elks are finally back in a position where they’re only one game away from appearing in the Grey Cup championship game for the first time since 2015.

The last time it happened, the Elks defeated the cross-province rival Calgary Stampeders in the Western Final before going on to defeat the Ottawa Redblacks to win the Grey Cup. This time around, after finishing the regular season with a 13-5 record, the Elks are anchored by quarterback Cody Fajardo, wider receiver Austin Mack, running back Justin Rankin, defensive lineman Malik Carney, and cornerback Tyrell Ford.

The Elks went 1-1 when facing the Lions this season. On July 4 in Vancouver, they lost 24-36 to their British Columbian counterparts but rectified things with a 19-17 win at home on July 17. This is a big part of what makes this Western Final such an intriguing matchup with many sportsbooks having very close odds on the winner.

Home field advantage does favour the Elks in major way, as they only lost one game back on August 1 to the Saskatchewan Roughriders at Commonwealth Stadium. The Lions, meanwhile, finished the season with a 4-5 record on the road which could certainly play into Edmonton’s hands if can get a handle on Lions quarterback Nathan Rourke. The 28-year-old is a perfect 7-0 against the Elks and was not active during BC’s loss to Edmonton this season.

This is about as close of a matchup as you can get for the Western Final. There are factors on both sides that will help each squad get an edge, but it all depends on how things will actually play out on the field.
