  • Ohio sports betting recorded its lowest sports betting totals since launching in January
  • Ohio reported just $362.1 million in total online and retail sports betting handle for June
  • Limited betting markets and promotional slowdowns usually make for declining summer months

Football season likely can’t come soon enough for Ohio sports betting (and other states) as betting handles and taxable revenues continue to decline during the summer months.

The Ohio Casino Control Commission reported just a little over $362.1 million in total sports betting handle for June, the lowest monthly total since Ohio sports betting burst onto the scene in January.

The slowdown is not unexpected, as most states typically experience lower sports betting totals during the summer when sports betting markets are limited in options and operator promotions tend to decrease.

Total taxable sports betting revenue was reported at $32.7 million, a nearly $25 million decrease from May’s $57.8 million total.

DraftKings, FanDuel Still Tops in Buckeye State

Ohio reported $362,111,919 in total sports betting handle, a decline of nearly $84 million from May’s $446.2 million handle total. Online sports betting again dominated the handle figures, with online sports betting operators reporting $348,377,229 in handle for the month.

Promotional spending among the online sports betting operators fell to a new low in June as well, which may also be a large factor in the overall handle decline. Operators only spent $14.8 million on promotions for the month, a decline of nearly $9 million from May’s totals. For comparison, during the launch of sports betting in January operators spent more than $319.8 million on promotions to attract bettors.

DraftKings and FanDuel again were the top two operators in the state. FanDuel reported the highest handle in the state for June at $120.3 million compared with DraftKings $117.49 million in handle. Bet365 also continued its strong run in Ohio, reporting the third highest handle in the month at $26.5 million, narrowly topping BetMGM’s $25.8 million in June.

Fanatics, which just announced a new retail sportsbook in the state in conjunction with the Columbus Blue Jackets, reported $2.2 million in online sports betting for the month.

The Reds and BetMGM announced in June that the sportsbook would be relocated from the Great American Ball Park to a new location in downtown Cincinnati.

The new sportsbook will be located at The Banks, a mixed-use development near the baseball stadium and in proximity to the Ohio River. BetMGM noted that the sportsbook at the Reds ball park will remain open through Fall 2023.
