  • Alvarez vs Golovkin III has people on social media buzzing in a big way
  • What are the key details on all of this and who is favored at this juncture?
  • Check out the odds, the backstory to all of this coming together, and my prediction for what the path ahead looks like

Alvarez vs Golovkin III is a fight many theorized we would see but might be happening sooner than expected. September 12th at AT&T Stadium is the likely date/time for this mega bout to transpire. The first two bouts were widely controversial and a third bout seems inevitable.

Something to put a bow on the rivalry and leave the boxing world with some sense of closure. It seems like financial terms have been agreed upon on both sides, a verbal agreement has been reached, and things are trending in a positive direction.

Alvarez vs Golovkin III Odds

Fighter Odds
 Canelo Alvarez -260
Gennady Golovkin +200

Odds taken Mar. 18.

The first bout was a split draw where virtually everyone thought GGG had done enough to win a unanimous decision. Alvarez was awarded the majority decision win in the sequel. Yet another fight that the boxing world was scratching their collective head at, some saltier about the whole thing more than others.

The pair of fights happened in 2017 and 2018 respectively. 2020 spaced things out just enough and fans are chomping at the bit, to the appropriate degree, for booking this Alvarez vs Golovkin III prizefight. Striking while the iron is hot before greedy promoters wait too long and cool things off.

Alvarez and GGG Trilogy

Canelo Alvarez still has a desire to fight Billy Joe Saunders in June. The idea is that he would fight Saunders and then take on GGG in the fall. If coronavirus minded considerations result in that June card getting canceled, Alvarez may jump right towards a GGG trilogy.

It seems like this third Golovkin bout could happen regardless but it’s not officially the next fight for Alvarez. Pending on where things are at with the pandemic it could be Saunders and GGG for the remainder of Alvarez’s 2020 campaign.

Saunders in the Summer?

A June fight with Saunders and a September fight with GGG is quite the quick turn around all factors considered. That is the plan, for now, though and Alvarez seems to be preparing as if his Saunders fight is still a go.

This is an admirable, ambitious effort for Canelo Alvarez to eyeball two elite level opponents in Las Vegas and Dallas over a few months. The biggest box office attraction possible at 160 lbs is this Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin collision. Lance Pugmire of The Athletic revealed the details on this attraction coming together on Tuesday.

Based on the widespread general perception that he won the first fight, GGG was a favorite heading into the rematch with Alvarez. He was an even more sizeable favorite heading into their very first fight. This time out, Alvarez is noticeably favored heading into part three. This is not just a result of Alvarez getting awarded a win in the second bout. It’s also tied to this perception that Alvarez is settling into his competitive prime while perhaps GGG’s best days are behind him.

Some pundits and fans thought Golovkin showed signs of slowing down against Sergiy Derevyanchenko. Conversely, Alvarez has defended his middleweight gold while also capturing light-heavyweight hardware over Sergey Kovalev via eleventh round KO. Based on these factors I wager the odds won’t change a great deal ahead of this bout happening as compared to where the opening odds are at.
