The US Open men’s singles draw opens its Round of 128 action on Sunday, August 30. Included on the slate is Miomir Kecmanovic looking to finally solve Denis Shapovalov.

Scheduled for August 30, 2026, at 1:50 PM ET on the Grandstand court, this first-round clash sees Shapovalov as the betting favorite. The most critical question for handicappers is whether Kecmanovic can adjust his baseline defense to neutralize the heavy left-handed topspin that has dictated their prior encounters.

While Kecmanovic (No. 64) has performed decently in the 2026 ATP Race, his first-serve return points won percentage drops significantly when facing high-velocity lefties, and the 52-week splits from Tennis Ratio confirm why: Shapovalov wins 30.4% of return points against opponents’ first serves compared to Kecmanovic’s 27.3%, breaks serve in 23.2% of return games versus 21.3% for the Serbian, and creates 0.61 break point opportunities per return game against 0.55 for Kecmanovic.

That return edge is the engine behind Shapovalov’s 1.035 dominance ratio over the past year, while Kecmanovic sits below parity at 0.957.

Kecmanovic vs Shapovalov Picks & Best Bets

The 6-0 head-to-head across all levels – stretching from a 2016 Futures clay final through five ATP hard-court meetings – is not a coincidence. Shapovalov’s ability to generate acute inside-out forehand angles forces Kecmanovic into defensive positions, allowing the Canadian to dictate the tempo of baseline exchanges.

Moneyline Pick: Shapovalov to Win (56¢ / -127 at Kalshi)

Kecmanovic has never found a tactical solution, and his 53.8% tiebreak conversion rate over the past 52 weeks pales next to Shapovalov’s 69.2% (per Tennis Ratio), making it unlikely the Serbian can steal close sets even if he keeps things competitive.

Shapovalov’s recent form underscores the confidence: he strung together four wins at Los Cabos in late July – including a three-set comeback against Cameron Norrie and straight-sets dismissals of Rinaldo Pacheco Mendez, Dalibor Svrcina, and Reese Hijikata – and followed that with a clean 6-1, 6-4 win over Adrian Mannarino at the Cincinnati Masters before bowing out to Rafael Jodar, one of the tour’s most in-form teenagers.

Kecmanovic, by contrast, enters the Open on the back foot after a listless straight-sets loss to Fabian Marozsan at Winston-Salem and a three-set defeat to Flavio Cobolli at Cincinnati, continuing a pattern of wilting against offensive-minded opponents – precisely the archetype Shapovalov embodies.

Instead of laying -137 at traditional sportsbooks, I am targeting Shapovalov at 56¢ at Kalshi. This translates to an implied probability of 56%, effectively offering -127 American odds. With the consensus moneyline drifting further toward Shapovalov since the market opened (from 1.826 to 1.721), the Kalshi contract remains the sharpest entry point available.

Over 38.5 Games (51¢ / -104 at Polymarket)

I anticipate a protracted battle based on their combined hold percentages and historical match lengths. Neither competitor dominates return games efficiently enough to record a clean, straight-sets victory. Each of the last three meetings went the distance, featuring prolonged sets and a tight second-set tiebreak during their Dallas encounter.

With Polymarket pricing the Over 38.5 games at 51¢ (implied -104 odds), the market value is tremendous compared to traditional books offering worse prices on a higher game total. Reaching 39 games essentially requires four tight sets (or a five-setter). Given their history of trading sets and strong serving metrics, backing a lengthy fixture offers a distinct mathematical edge.

While these represent the standard sportsbook market, I highly recommend leveraging Kalshi and Polymarket contracts for better payouts on the moneyline and total games, as outlined in my analysis above.
