Joshua and Usyk’s Mental Battle

Making inferences based on the prior bouts of each, I see this fight picking up major steam as it encroaches near the mid-rounds.

I think the opening few frames will involve a lot of kinetic chess as Joshua and Usyk utilize their fight IQs to collect intel on the other.

I think Usyk will be heavy with the feints to manage the range and make informed offensive decisions in the early rounds. Looking to perplex the defending champion as he increases the power in his shot selection and general output in the mid to later rounds.

Conversely, I think Joshua has a fairly underrated fight IQ though. He can create thoughtful setups whereby his undeniable KO power can shine through.

In the end, I do not think the ringside judges will be involved in the outcome of this unified heavyweight championship affair.

Pick: No (-170)

Joshua KO or Usyk Decision?

In terms of the degree of likelihood in relation to a winning outcome, it does make sense that Usyk winning via stoppage is perceived as least likely.

Usyk has had highlight-reel stoppages against fighters like Tony Bellew. But many boxing observers don’t think Usyk’s approach has been translating well in his cruiserweight to heavyweight transition as of yet.

A narrative that the former undisputed cruiserweight world champion obviously disavows.

A small heavyweight succeeding is not unprecedented as names like Ali, Holyfield, and Tyson come up as instant examples. Usyk looks to tap into that kind of energy in this contest.

I think Joshua will have to read Usyk’s movements and assess his pugilistic provides a fair bit in the earlier rounds. Once he has thoughtfully measured that out, I can see him getting far more pressure-heavy and purposefully aggressive circa the fourth and fifth rounds.

Ultimately, I do think Joshua puts down Usyk and has him staring up at the lights.

Pick: Anthony Joshua by KO, TKO, or DQ (-120)

When Does Usyk vs Joshua End?

There’s a reason that the round five to round eight range is where oddsmakers see Joshua being able to close out the show.

The odds for Usyk reflect the broader perception of some in the pugilistic public. That his defined path to victory lies in the judges’ scorecards as opposed to halting AJ in his tracks during any specific round.

The 92 percent overall finishing rate of the unified and defending titleholder Joshua is quite difficult to ignore.

I foresee the champion retaining his belts via KO or TKO between the sixth and eighth rounds. Specifically, I lean most towards round six marking the end of the prizefight.

Pick: Anthony Joshua – Round 6 (+1200)
