  • Can Soto firmly establish his place as WBO champion?

Elwin Soto vs Edward Heno is the top of the marquee prize fight for this Golden Boy card. The event goes tonight at Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio, California.

This fight features two top ten light flyweights in the world, per BoxRec’s ranking system. The WBO world light flyweight title is on the line for this prizefight. These 108-pounders will be streamed live on Facebook and Ring TV.

Who emerges with the belt once the dust settles after twelve rounds?

Elwin Soto vs Edward Heno Odds

Fighter Odds
Elwin Soto -500
Edward Heno +350

*Odds taken October 24th

Soto has four knockouts in a row but is on the heels of a controversial victory. He beat Angel Acosta via a suspect stoppage with less than thirty seconds remaining in the final round. A fight in which Acosta was dropped early, came back strong, and was on his way to winning on all three judge’s scorecards. Though he got the win, Soto still has a lot to prove here so he can regain some momentum.

As much as Soto is looking to make his first successful title defense, he’s also looking to validate his place as champion overall. I see this fight being an opportunity for him to not only win but win with style points.

Soto Retains Title

Heno has yet to fight at the world level so to jump into a WBO world title fight is a big test. It’s unchartered waters for Heno and he’s also making his US debut.

Soto admittedly isn’t that much more experienced at the world level. His last bout was his first foray fighting in the US and it resulted in a shocking upset victory in his favor. Can Heno prove his worth on the world stage the first time out just like Soto did in his last fight?

Heno is a strange case in that he’s an undefeated fighter but he also has five draws in 19 pro fights. In fact, he began his pro record with an unremarkable record of zero wins and three draws and then was inactive for a year. Since then, Heno has become the OPBF and the ABF champion which are distinctions he still carries heading into this fight.

Soto has shown a capable amount of KO power recently and has produced good results in recent outings. Heno is more prone to play the long game and his KO rate is sub-40 percent.

I don’t think Heno can sustain an effort like that over twelve rounds. He’ll likely present an opportunity for Soto to crack him at some point. I don’t see Heno as having what it takes to stop Soto’s 13 fight winning streak.
