Odds taken June 8

Magdaleno enters this contest on the heels of back to back wins. He tasted defeat to Isaac Dogboe in April 2018; the lone loss of his pro career. In that contest, Magdaleno lost the WBO junior featherweight world title he captured from Nonito Donaire in November 2016. The back to back wins in question were over Rico Ramos as well as Rafael Rivera, where he won and defended the WBC United States featherweight title respectively.

Vicente last tasted defeat to Tramaine Williams in July 2019. He was able to rebound with a KO win over Rodolfo Hernandez Montoya in October 2019; capturing the WBO Latino junior featherweight title in the process.

Top Rank on ESPN

While Magdaleno has held gold at 122lbs, he is now eyeballing that champ status at 126 lbs. This fight however will be at junior lightweight which is more of a function of COVID-19 creating a difficult landscape for training and weight cuts. Vicente has a notable 78-percent knockout rate but his resume reads differently than Magdaleno’s. Yenifel Vicente has tasted defeat when trying to step up to that elite tier of competitors. That same rarified air that Jessie Magdaleno has occupied.

The boxing community has been starving for action. Two have two events in a week is a true blessing from the marquess of Queensberry gods.

Jessie Magdaleno’s razor-sharp ringcraft comes from his well established amateur background. Magdaleno fought almost 140 fights and has 120 amateur wins to his credit. The decorated ammy also has the benefit of being a southpaw. The unique angles/ technique opportunities afforded to him in that stance in conjunction with the aforementioned amateur background create a monster to deal with for Vicente. Yenifel Vicente will be 34 by the end of this month and Magdaleno is just coming into his athletic prime at 28 years of age.

Jessie Magdaleno’s few moments of looking vulnerable in the ring have been informed from being depleted. 122 lbs was a division he captured world championship status in but with time it became a hard weight cut for his body to keep doing. A version of Jessie Magdaleno competing at a contracted weight of 130 lbs is quite interesting to me. I’m sure fellow pugilist pundits and fans alike can agree with that sentiment.

I imagine he will have a much more energetic, vibrant, and sustained style through all ten rounds. I think Magdaleno will box a tactful, meticulous fight and win via decision in the end.

Pick: Jessie Magdaleno (-950)

Picks for the Remainder of the Card

  1. Adam Lopez vs Luis Coria: This is a ten-round bout for the vacant NABF featherweight championship. I think Coria’s experience mostly being in four and six rounders does him a disservice in this title fight. That coupled with Lopez’s dogged determination, I think Adam Lopez emerges with the championship belt. Pick: Adam Lopez (-2250)
  2. Bryan Lua vs Dan Murray: The 5-3 Murray has struggled to find consistency in his pro career and is coming off of a defeat in his last outing. I see the 5-0 Lua getting it done and putting on a sweet science clinic. I think Bryan Lua gets it done via decision in one of the opening bouts on this Magdaleno vs Vicente card. Pick: Bryan Lua (-10000)
