Odds as of May 12th

This title unification contest pits two undefeated world champions against each other.

Only one can leave as a dual belt holder and the other leaves with the first blemish on their professional record.

Luis Nery’s Title Unification

Luis Nery has the distinction of being a two-division world champion as he captured bantamweight gold before ascending to super bantamweight to capture another crown.

Nery looks to make the first successful defense of his newly acquired WBC gold in this bout. Though his last outing went the distance, this broke Luis Nery’s impressive stoppage streak of eleven consecutive fights that he had been riding.

Though his jump up to super bantamweight saw him capture a world title, certain fans and pundits in the boxing community thought Nery looked a bit rough in his unanimous decision victory over Aaron Alameda in September.

His last bout with Alameda caused question marks to emerge. But this upcoming outing presents a chance for Luis Nery to silence these doubters.

Brandon Figueroa’s Quest for WBC Gold

Figueroa has held WBA hardware for a bit over two years now, starting out as an interim belt holder who had his status upgraded in late-2019.

After his lone pro bout that wasn’t a win, a split draw to Julio Ceja in November 2019, the super bantamweight champion returned to the win column emphatically.

Brandon Figueroa’s last outing saw him dismantle Damien Vazquez via tenth-round TKO to defend his WBA throne during their September prizefight.

These 122 pounders are in their mid-twenties and just starting to encroach into the competitive primes. Both also match up well on paper stylistically.

Figueroa has a five-and-a-half-inch reach advantage over his opponent. Nery will have to be savvy within the range and utilize the unique angles afforded to him with his southpaw stance.

Brandon Figueroa is also sophisticated with the phone booth fighting though and has debilitating bodywork that could fold Nery if he’s not defensively vigilant at all times.

This showdown is slated to be a twelve-round affair, but I don’t see it going the distance.

Nery vs Figueroa pits individuals who have stoppage rates of seventy-seven percent and seventy-six percent, respectively.

Ultimately, I think there’s good value in going with prop bets on this contest not going the distance, and on Nery winning via KO or TKO.

Pick: Luis Nery (-400)
