Oregon vs Texas Predictions

  • Oregon +2.5 (-130)

Oregon faces an uphill battle against a perennial powerhouse, but Drew Smith leads an exceptional Ducks offense. Smith leads Oregon in home runs (15), batting average (.336), and RBI (61). He gets on base at a .415 clip and has a huge .600 slugging percentage. For the Ducks to keep it within three runs, Smith will have to produce.

On the mound, Cal Scolari is expected to get the nod for the Ducks in Game 1. The San Diego transfer has a 5-0 record this season in 11 starts (13 appearances), pitching to a 2.70 ERA in 53.1 innings. He has a huge strikeout rate (13.7 K/9) and a bit of a walk problem (4.9 BB/9). That said, he has the stuff to chew through the Longhorns’ tough lineup and give Oregon a shot to win.

Lefty Dylan Volantis will take the ball for Texas. He is 9-1 in 14 starts (15 appearances) with a stellar 1.94 ERA. Texas’ closer last year, Volantis has kept his strikeout rate (12.5 K/9) even with the extra innings (83.1 innings pitched). He has a sub-1.000 WHIP and the most strikeouts on the Longhorns.

  • Over 10 Runs (-120)

Both teams enter Saturday’s contest with season slugging percentages over .500. Oregon has slugged 116 home runs this season, essentially two per game. Texas has 17 fewer home runs (in three fewer games), but their slugging percentage is even higher, a testament to the team’s .299 batting average and fair share of doubles.

The offensive engine to watch for Texas is Aiden Robbins who leads the club with 23 home runs and 62 RBI. He is also hitting a whopping .347, just behind the team’s leader: Anthony Pack Jr. (.358).

Oregon’s Path to the Super Regional

Oregon rode excellent pitching through a perfect Eugene Regional. The Ducks dispatched Yale 14-2 before winning rivalry matchups over Washington State (4-0) and Oregon State (4-1). Oregon lost in the Big Ten Tournament Final 3-2 in 11 innings to No. 1-ranked UCLA. Oregon last made the College World Series in 1954.

Texas’ Path to the Super Regional

Texas dominated the Austin Regional, beating Holy Cross, Tarleton State, and UC Santa Barbara by a combined 41-7 score. Texas crashed out of the SEC tournament in the quarterfinals, but the Longhorns have rebounded with a hot start in an attempt to make the College World Series.

Texas has made a whopping 38 College World Series, an NCAA record. Out of these 38 trips, the Longhorns have won six titles (most recently in 2005) and have been runner-up six times.
