Towson On the Road Back
Backcourt issues have turned this into a season of streaks for Towson, which won 25 games and tied for first in the CAA regular-season a year ago and was the overwhelming favorite to win the league title in a preseason poll of league coaches. Guard Jason Gibson has not played since the third game of the season because of a back injury, and second-leading scorer Cam Holden was suspended for three games for violating team rules before returning the last time out, getting seven points and five assists off the bench in a 68-48 home victory over Monmouth on Saturday.

Senior returnees guard 6’4 Nicolas Timberlake (15.7 points, 4.0 rebounds) and forward 6’7 Charles Thompson (12.3 points, 7.7 rebounds) join Holden (14.5 points, 6.3 rebounds, 4.7 assists) as double-figure scorers. All three were named to the coaches’ preseason all-CAA team. Sophomore guard Ryan Conway, a redshirt at Seton Hall last year, had career highs with 17 points and five threes against Monmouth. He is starting in Gibson’s absence.
Towson has not shot well (43.5 percent) but plays a physical game and rebounds well. The Tigers’ plus-4.8 rebound margin is in the top 25 percent of teams in Division I. Thompson has four double-doubles this season,
Hofstra Off to a Fast Start
The Pride are paced by fifth-year senior guard Aaron Estrada, the 2022 CAA Player of the Year and the coaches’ choice to repeat in the preseason poll. Estrada, a 6’4 guard who played his first season at Saint Peter’s and another at Oregon, led the league in scoring at 18.5 points per game a year ago. He has upped his contribution to 20.3 points this season while shooting 52.5 percent from the floor and chipping in everywhere Estrada had 17 points, seven rebounds, four assists, and four steals in an 86-62 victory over Delaware on Saturday. He is averaging 5.3 rebounds and 4.1 assists, both second on the Pride.

Guard 6’6 Darlington Dubar (11.1 points, 5.3 rebounds per game) is the only other starter back from 2022, but Sacred Heart transfer guard 6’3 Tyler Thomas (14.1 points) had added another threat from distance, where the Pride likes to operate. Thomas, who averaged 16.4 points per game in the Northeast Conference last season. has 47 three-pointers and Estrada has 33. The Pride is averaging 8.6 made threes per game and is shooting 47.6 from the field, 37.0 from distance.
Manhattan transfer reserve 6’9 Warren Williams (8.9 points, 5.1 rebounds) adds bulk inside for a team that has a minus-3.7 rebound margin, 316th in Division I.
Hofstra vs Towson Prediction
Towson won and covered both meetings of these CAA contenders a year ago and is equipped to do it again now that Holden is back from suspension. The Tigers had a rebounding advantage in both games last season, and there is no reason to believe things have changed much since. Take the home team, the team that was the preseason pick to win the league.
