  • Cape Verde, the third second-smallest nation to ever play in a World Cup, is in the knockout stage
  • The island nation will have to face defending champion Argentina in the round of 32

Cape Verde’s unlikely run at the 2026 World Cup will continue for at least one more game. The African island nation of roughly 500,000 people managed three draws in the group stage, which was good enough for second in Group H.

Unfortunately, their reward is a round of 32 matchup with Lionel Messi and defending-champion Argentina, who have already clinched first in Group J with a pair of decisive wins over quality competition (3-0 vs Algeria, 2-0 vs Austria).

The opening odds for Argentina vs Cape Verde are the widest of the knockout stage (so far).

In the odds to advance, Argentina is -1600 and Cape Verde is +900.

Argentina’s World Cup Title Odds Improve After Group Stage

Argentina still has its final group-stage game to play against overmatched Jordan on Saturday, but La Albiceleste have already clinched first in the group thanks to convincing victories over Austria and Algeria.

The Argentines were priced at +967, on average, to win a second straight world championship heading into the group stage. That price has shortened dramatically to +675, leapfrogging Portugal for the fourth-best odds to win the World Cup.

Lionel Messi has proved that he’s still at his peak at age 39, scoring all five of Argentina’s goals in the tournament.

At prediction site Kalshi, Argentina is trading at 15.3 cents (equal to +554 odds). That price is second on the board, trailing only France (23.6 cents, or +324).

Cape Verde is trading at 0.2 cents (+49900) to do the impossible and lift the trophy.

Cape Verde Goes Toe-to-Toe With Global Heavyweights

Cape Verde has become the darling of the tournament thanks to improbable draws against Spain (0-0) and Uruguay (2-2). The latter saw them score two highlight reel goals and come back form a first-half deficit.

On the final matchday, they were full value for a single point against Saudi Arabia in another 0-0 draw. The Tubarões Azuis finished with 1.52 xGF to just 0.40 for the Saudis. They took 15 shots to Saudi Arabia’s seven, and earned four corners to Saudi Arabia’s two.

Eight of 16 matches for the round of 32 are now cemented. See all the knockout stage odds for the round of 32 here.
