Ohio State vs Purdue Predictions and Odds (Feb. 19)

No. 3 Purdue (23-4, 12-4 Big Ten) is a 12.5-point favorite over Ohio State in a Big Ten game at 1 pm ET on CBS. The Boilermakers have lost three of their last four, all on the road, after spending three weeks at No. 1.

Ohio State (11-15, 3-12 Big Ten) has lost seven in a row and 12 of 13 since winning at Northwestern on New Year’s Day. The Buckeyes also are 1-12 ATS in their last 13, a stretch that began with a 71-69 home loss to Purdue.

Purdue is a 12.5-point favorite against Ohio State in a series that it has dominated on the court if not elsewhere. The Boilermakers are 9-4 SU ad 6-6-1 ATS and have won four of the last five straight up. The Buckeyes’ only win in the last five was an 87-78 overtime decision in the quarterfinals of the 2021 Big Ten tournament. Purdue has won five of the last six at Mackey Arena but is only 2-3-1 against the spread.

The Boilermakers are 11-14-2 ATS, 5-7-1 at home. Ohio State is 8-18 ATS, 1-8 on the road. Purdue is 11-16 against the over. Ohio State is 14-12.

Purdue Hits the Skids

The Boilermakers still have the best player in the nation in Wooden Award favorite in 7’4″ Zach Edey, but they have fallen for from their spot No. 1 in the AP Top 25 after losing three of their last four. Edey (22.0 points,12.8 rebounds) remains the focal point, but recent losses — all on the road and all to Big Ten first division teams Indiana, Northwestern and Maryland — have exposed their lack of experience generally and their freshman backcourt more specifically. Teams are bodying Edey or sending a second defenders at him, and there is little help.

Freshmen guards Fletcher Loyer (12.2 points) and  Braden Smith (10.2 points, 4.4 rebounds, 4.3 assists) are scoring adequately, but the absence of 2022 starters Jaden Ivey, Trevion Williams and Sasha Stefanovic — as scorers and leaders — has become more noticeable the last two weeks. The Boilermakers gave up a 29-4 run in the second half of a 68-54 loss at Maryland the last time out Thursday and were outrebounded 35-23, their largest rebounding deficit of the season.

Ohio State Struggles Bigly

The Buckeyes have fallen off a cliff since a 93-77 victory over Iowa on Jan. 21. The Hawkeyes got revenge with a 92-75 victory in the rematch Thursday, giving Buckeyes got their seventh straight loss  while extending a sputtering stretch. Ohio State gave up a season high 92 points to the Hawkeyes, who clinically dissected the Buckeyes’ 2-3 zone defense and shot 56.9 percent from the floor. The Buckeyes had a season-low point total game before that, a 62-41 home loss  Michigan State in which they shot 28.3 percent.

Freshman forward Bryce Sensabaugh (16.3 points, 5.2 rebounds) remains the most reliable Buckeye, but the rest are in and out. Justice Sueing (12.2 points, 5-0 rebounds) has struggled since returning to the starting lineup two weeks ago. The inconsistency has been compounded by the nagging left shoulder injury to center Zed Key (10.8 points, 7.5 rebounds). Key was injured in the first game against Purdue, a 71-69 loss on Jan. xx, and he was forced to leave the Iowa game  in the second half with the same injury. Coach Chris Holtmann  has tried a different look recently, starting freshman Roddy Gayle in the last three.

Ohio State vs Purdue Prediction

It does not matter what the number is here. Purdue is ready to lay a licking on the next team up following its tough stretch, and Ohio State has shown it is more than willing to absorb one. Only six teams entered Saturday games with a worse overall cover percentage than Ohio State’s (30.8), and only Tulsa has a worse road cover percentage than the Buckeyes’ 11.1. Whatever is ailing the Purdue, the Buckeyes will be the cure.
