App State vs Coastal Carolina Prediction, Pick & Odds (Thursday, Nov. 7)

Coastal Carolina (4-4, 3-5 ATS) hosts App State (4-4, 3-5 ATS) Thursday night in one of the most heated rivalries in the Sun Belt.

That’s right, heated.

Last year’s game ended with Coastal Carolina beating App State on a game-ending 24-yard field goal by Kade Hensley for the program’s first win in Boone. Mountaineer fans responded by throwing trash and debris at celebrating Coastal Carolina players. In 2022, it was App State who beat then 14th-ranked Coastal on a last-second field goal. It’s no wonder Coastal coach Tim Beck said earlier in the week App State was “a team we don’t like, and they don’t like us.”

You don’t see this very often in sports betting where one team is a favorite at one sportsbook but the underdog at the others. BetMGM had Coastal Carolina as a one-point favorite as of Wednesday morning, while DraftKings and Caesars had App State as favorites by a point.

The moneyline bets are close, as you would think, with no great value on either side. The total is extremely high, most books have it at 62.5, while FanDuel has it at 61.5.

Coastal has lost its last three games against the spread, but has been a great over bet this season. Coastal is 6-2 over/under this season.

Going Coast to Coast

The biggest issue for the Chanticleers has been a defense that allows 32.4 points a game. Coastal has lost three games in a row, and given up over 30 points each time. They are just 1-3 in conference play.

Offensively, the Chanticleers have used a couple of quarterbacks. Ethan Vasko has started all eight games, throwing for 1,401 and running for 285, but former Michigan State transfer Noah Kim has also been on spot duty. Running back Braydon Bennett has seven touchdowns after missing some games earlier this season with an injury.

Downloading the App State

If you thought Coastal Carolina’s defense was bad, well, here are the Mountaineers. They rank last in the Sun Belt, allowing 34.4 points a game. And while everyone loves the Fun Belt style of football…lots of points, you must play some defense some of the time to win consistently.

App State has won two in a row, each with touchdowns in the last three minutes. Quarterback Joey Aguilar threw four picks in a loss to Louisiana but has thrown for seven touchdowns in his last two games.

The Mountaineers offense features senior WR Kaedin Robinson, who leads the conference in receiving yards with 764. He’s the big go-to guy.

This game screams mid-week college football chaos. Coastal fans have waited a year to get back at App State for what happened last year. The Chanticleers should be able to run the ball against a bad App State defense and score points. The crowd should help Coastal’s defense make some plays.

But just how many points? 62.5 is really high for this game, and we think that the short week for both teams will impact both offenses’ execution. We know App State is favored at some books, but that means we love the chance to grab Coastal as an underdog.
