After a thrilling Week 1 in college football, Week 2 delivers another must-watch matchup under the lights in Norman, Oklahoma. The #18 Sooners host the #14 Wolverines in a clash of ranked programs on Saturday night (Sep. 6).
Can Michigan pull off an early-season road upset, or will Oklahoma protect home turf? Let’s break down the early odds, predictions, and best bets for Michigan vs Oklahoma.

Michigan vs Oklahoma Line
Several sportsbooks release opening lines for the marquee games during the summer. Back in June, FanDuel opened the Sooners as 1.5-point favorites with a total of 53.5. Since then, the market has shifted significantly: Oklahoma is now a 5.5-point favorite, and the total has dropped to 46.5.
Michigan vs Oklahoma Prediction
That kind of movement is obviously worth noting. Bettors must avoid falling into recency bias, but Week 1 still offered meaningful takeaways – especially with two quarterbacks making their debuts in new systems.
Michigan’s Bryce Underwood, the top recruit in the 2025 class, led the Wolverines to a 34-17 win over New Mexico in Ann Arbor. He went 21-for-31 passing for 251 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions. He had no impact on the ground, rushing twice for negative five yards. His stat line wasn’t flashy, but it was enough.
In Norman, Washington State transfer John Mateer shined in his debut, guiding the Sooners to a 35-3 win over Illinois State. Mateer completed 30 of 37 passes for 392 yards with three touchdowns and one interception.
Still, Oklahoma failed to cover the hefty 40.5-point spread, while Michigan also missed the number as a 34.5-point favorite.
For Brent Venables, the pressure is building. In four years, he’s just 24-17 with one winning season and three bowl losses. This may be his best roster yet, but the result against Michigan could define his season.
Venables leans on a defense capable of making life difficult for a freshman like Underwood, who looked shaky at times against an overmatched Lobos defense. Road environments only add to that challenge.
On the other side, second-year Michigan coach Sherrone Moore brings back what should be another dominant defense after finishing fifth in PFF’s grading last season. That unit opened strong in Week 1, as New Mexico QB Jack Layne completed just 31 of 47 passes and managed only 208 yards – 4.4 yards per completion – with one touchdown and three interceptions. The Wolverines also held the Lobos to 50 rushing yards.
With two talented defenses and an unproven quarterback under center for Michigan, it’s no surprise the market has leaned toward Oklahoma and the under.
I expect both defenses to set the tone early, with experience ultimately rising to the top.
Michigan vs Oklahoma Best Bet
The current betting market for this game leaves a sour taste if you like Oklahoma or the under, with both numbers moving sharply against you.
Still, there’s a way to adjust. I lean toward the under but prefer targeting the first half instead of the full game. Ideally, I’d want 24 rather than the 23.5 posted everywhere, so instead I’m backing Oklahoma -3 on the first-half spread.
The roaring Sooner crowd and a tough Venables-led defense should wreak havoc on Bryce Underwood in his first actual test. Michigan may settle in and adjust after halftime, potentially keeping the full-game spread within 5.5. But early on, chaos favors Oklahoma. I’d rather strike in the first half, when Mateer can capitalize before the Wolverines’ defense adjusts.
