Fresno State visits San Jose State at CEFCU Stadium on Saturday, September 19. Kickoff is at 11 p.m. ET on FS1, with the Bulldogs entering at 1-1 and the Spartans at 2-1.

Both offenses arrive off productive rushing performances. Fresno State beat newly minted FBS school Sacramento State 49-3, while San Jose State ran for 255 yards against FCS Cal Poly.

My Fresno State vs San Jose State prediction comes down to which defense can carry its recent form into this rivalry. The spread pick, odds and total bet follow.

Fresno State vs San Jose State Prediction

• Pick: Fresno State -4 (-110) at BetMGM.

I’m laying the points with Fresno State. The Bulldogs gained 542 yards against Sacramento State, their biggest offensive output since November 2022, and did it with contributions from both the passing and running games.

Jayden Mandal completed 23 of 26 passes for 316 yards. Bryson Donelson added 102 rushing yards and three touchdowns, giving Fresno State a way to finish drives without asking its quarterback to make every play.

The big plays came from both directions. Ezekiel Avit scored on a 73-yard reception, and Donelson broke a 56-yard touchdown run. San Jose State will have to defend the entire field rather than loading up against one part of the offense.

The Spartans have weapons of their own. Luke Weaver has 788 passing yards and 96 rushing yards through three games, and Jabari Bates just ran for 163 yards against Cal Poly. San Jose State’s line has allowed only two sacks all season.

That protection keeps me from calling for another blowout. Still, Fresno State has held an opponent to seven points or fewer five times since Matt Entz arrived in 2025, including last week’s 49-3 win. I trust that defense to get enough stops for the Bulldogs to cover a number below seven.

Fresno also won last year’s meeting 41-14 in San Jose, holding the Spartans to 227 yards. The rosters have changed, but that result adds to my confidence in the Bulldogs’ ability to handle this road setting.

Fresno State has won the last two meetings by 23 and 27 points respectively, easily covering this mark. In fact, no matchup since 2019 (five matchups) has been decided by less than a touchdown. I would not be opposed to looking at alternate spreads such as Fresno State -6.5 or -9.5.

The spread has tightened from 6.5 points or 7 full points on some books down to a flat 4. The total has also slipped from 52.5 to 48.5 – and juiced toward the under (-112).

• Secondary pick: Under 48.5 (-112).

I also lean under, with Fresno’s defense doing most of the work. San Jose State’s pass protection should help it sustain possessions, but long drives only hurt this bet if they consistently finish in touchdowns.

Bates’ recent production gives the Spartans a reason to keep running. Donelson gives Fresno the same option, especially if the Bulldogs take a second-half lead and can make San Jose State defend repeated rushing attempts.

The risk is the explosive plays Fresno produced last week. A pair of long touchdowns can change a total quickly, so the spread is my stronger play. For the under, I’m counting on the Bulldogs to make San Jose State settle for punts or field goals often enough to keep the combined score below 49.

While the closing line value has narrowed my ability to win this bet, I still like the under. San Jose State has yet to score more than 30 points despite winning its last two games. Fresno State scored 49 points last week, but a goose egg against USC (whom San Jose State scored 26 points against) does weigh on my mind.

I am projecting a final score around Fresno State 27, San Jose State 20 with a bit of a sweat on the under.
