Georgia Now -130 Favorite in Updated 2021 SEC Championship Odds – Is Now the Time to Bet Alabama?

Georgia is the new Belle of the college football Ball thanks to Alabama’s shocking loss to Texas A&M in Week 6, coupled with its own blowout win over Auburn.

The Bulldogs overtook the Crimson Tide not only atop the college football polls, but also in the SEC Championship futures market.

The #1 Bulldogs are now -130 to win the SEC in the college football conference championship odds, while Alabama has slipped to +110. It’s the first time the Crimson Tide has been plus money to win the conference since April 19th, and they now have just a 35% chance of winning the national championship, according to ESPN’s FPI.

Georgia meanwhile, has a 91% chance to make the CFP according to FPI, and is the top program in not only the polls, but in SP+ and FPI as well.

Bulldogs Pack Serious Bite

Georgia is on top of the regular season polls first the first time since 1982. They are on pace to produce one of the greatest defensive seasons of all-time, and have yet to break a sweat through six weeks.

The Bulldogs boast a ridiculous +150 point differential and have surrendered only three touchdowns all season, two of which came in garbage time. The first string defense has yielded just one TD, while the program is allowing only 201 yards per contest.

The sparkling defensive numbers have overshadowed an offense that’s been efficient so far, and has yet to have to play from behind. Stetson Bennett has done a fantastic job filling in for the injured JT Daniels, racking up 8 TD and the highest QBR of any pivot who’s dropped back at least 50 times.

The running game has been chugging along to the tune of 5.0 yards per carry and features four different backs that can make you pay.

Georgia’s resume already features three wins over top-20 opposition and will face #11 Kentucky and #20 Florida in the next three weeks. Should they pass both of those tests, it will be smooth sailing to the SEC title game, which will likely be against Alabama.

Tide Down, But Not Out

#5 Bama’s road back to the College Football Playoff got a little tougher thanks to its surprise defeat, but it’s by no means impossible for them to return. They need to sweep their remaining regular season games and beat the Bulldogs in the SEC Championship, something they might have had to do anyways to ensure its position among the final four.

The Crimson Tide outgained Jimbo Fisher’s Aggies by 143 yards in Week 6, but still fell a hair short. The loss snapped their 100-game undefeated streak versus unranked opponents, and also marked the first time a former Nick Saban assistant has beaten him as the head coach of a different program.

Despite the blemish, Alabama is still a juggernaut and hands down the best team in the SEC West. They rank 25th in offensive success rate, and grade out as the fifth best offense per SP+, and the seventh best defense.

QB Bryce Young is the current Heisman Trophy favorite, and outside of a date with #17 Arkansas on November 20th, they don’t have any daunting games left on their schedule.

Is There Value on Alabama?

Prior to Week 6, SBD made Alabama a 6.5-point favorite over Georgia on a neutral field. Now that the Crimson Tide has a loss on its resume you have to think the line for that game would be close to a pick’em, if not slightly favoring the Bulldogs.

Either way, you wouldn’t get ‘Bama on the moneyline for odds as favorable as +110, so if you’re a Crimson Tide truther now would be the time to bet them.

Of course the problem is we might not have seen the best that Georgia has to offer, especially on offense. Don’t forget their starting quarterback is out, as is wideout George Pickens, who led the team in receiving touchdowns last season and is a projected Day 2 pick in next year’s NFL Draft.

It’s been a while since the Bulldogs have commanded this much respect, but this year’s program looks destined to dethrone Alabama.
