Cam Ward and the Miami Hurricanes (4-0, 3-1 ATS) host Virginia Tech (2-2, 1-3 ATS) Friday night at Hard Rock Stadium. Hopefully, the real hurricane, Helene, will be out of Florida by then.

Miami has had four lopsided games, and is just one point away from being perfect against the spread. The Canes beat Florida A&M by 47 points, and the spread was 48.

Miami is a 17.5-point favorite at most popular sportsbooks, with the over/under set at 54.5.

Starting QB Matchup

Ward, the transfer from Washington State, has been incredible behind center for the Hurricanes. He’s second in the nation in passing yards (1,439) and first in touchdown passes. It’s no wonder Ward is favored in the Heisman odds.

Miami has outscored its first four opponents by an average of 42 points. Ward’s been so good he’s been telling opposing defenses where the play is going, and they still can’t stop him.

Virginia Tech quarterback Kyron Drones and Ward are cousins and train with the same QB coach. Drones took over the Hokies offense in Week 3 last season and is also a two-way threat.

To be sure, Miami hasn’t played anyone as good as Virginia Tech this season, but the Hokies just don’t have the offensive firepower to keep up with Ward.

Ward’s favorite receiver has been senior Xavier Restrepo with 20 catches for 362 yards and five touchdowns, and freshman running back Jordan Lyle is averaging over eight yards per carry. Miami’s defense is sixth in the nation against the run and 11th in scoring. Granted, Miami hasn’t played anyone that formidable, but they’ve been dominant.

Virginia Tech trailed Rutgers 23-7 last week, scored two quick touchdowns and two-point conversions to tie the score, then promptly gave up a long pass and a Rutgers field goal to lose. It was the first time Rutgers had ever won at Lane Stadium.

Virginia Tech also lost to Vandy in OT in Week 1, but that loss looks better in hindsight after Vandy took Missouri to overtime last week.

The Hokies attack is led by running back Bhayshul Tuten, who has 391 yards and seven scores.

The biggest concern if you’re a Va Tech fan is that the Hokies defense ranks 104th in the country allowing over 188 yards a game. Ward and the U must be licking their chops to get at a porous Tech defense. Rutgers had the ball for almost 40 minutes in their win last week. That’s the sign of a defense that can’t get off the field.

Also factor in that it’s a short week for Virginia Tech, which hurts defenses more, because they have less time to prepare.

There is no difference in any of the point spreads, but you can find the over/under at 54 at most sportsbooks. The best value for a Virginia Tech moneyline bet is +600 at FanDuel. You can get Miami moneyline at -900 at BetMGM and Bet365.
