  • Cersei Lannister’s arc throughout Game of Thrones has been one of triumph and tragedy
  • There is just one more prophecy facing Cersei, and it concerns her death
  • In which episode will Cersei meet her end during Season 8?

Throughout Game of Thrones’ history, Cersei Lannister has been the all-enduring matriarch.

While most of the journey through Westeros and beyond has centered on the Starks and the Targaryens, Cersei has kept the Lannisters relevant. She has either pulled the strings of whomever is ruling, or assumed the Iron Throne herself.

But her time is coming to an end. At some point in Season 8, we will see Cersei bow out from the show. But when?

Maggy the Frog Predicted Cersei Lannister’s End

Even Cersei has acknowledged that she’s dying sooner or later.

Everything she said came true…This prophecy, it’s fate.

In the season six premiere, Cersei tells Jaime of the prophecy she heard as a child.

It is her fate, taking her survival off the table. It’s actually made her one of the least profitable bets to make it out of Season 8.

Cersei Lannister’s Prophecy

Part of Prophecy Has it Come True?
You’ll never wed the prince, you’ll wed the king Yes
You’ll be queen for a time. Then comes another[…]to cast you down Yes
The King will have 20 children and you will have three Yes
The Valonqar shall wrap his hands about your[…]throat and choke the life from you No

Valonqar means little brother. Whether that’s Tyrion, Jaime or someone else’s little brother, Cersei is dying. It’ll likely likely happen before Daenerys Targaryen meets her end as well.

The words “little brother” have also have given Jaime and Tyrion shorter odds of being the first Lannister to perish in the new season.

Now the question of when.

Cersei Will Make it Through Episodes 1 and 2

George R.R. Martin has prided himself on the fact that this story won’t play out the way you think. While it’s likely true, Cersei Lannister has been a central character throughout seven seasons.

Killing her in the first two episodes would be a shock, but wouldn’t lend itself to a ton of buildup.

Targaryen, Stark, Baratheon, and Lannister Deaths by Episode

Episode Range Number of Deaths
Episodes 1-2 1
Episodes 3-5 1
Episodes 6-8 7
Episodes 9-10 12

These deaths only include characters that carry the family name. The lone exception was Jon Snow’s “death”. But he’s both a Stark and Targaryen anyways.

The series has typically back-loaded many of the key deaths.

As you can see, the series has typically back-loaded many of the key deaths. The one exception is that Joffrey Baratheon died in the second episode of season four.

Which Episode Will We See Cersei Lannister’s Death?

History tells us that it will be late in the season, but the abbreviated style of Season 8 plunges that into mystery.

After eliminating the first two episodes, this also feels like a storyline that will be tied up before the finale. There will be a lot to get to, especially in the final episode, and Cersei’s send-off should be built to, while also being a stand-alone moment.

Episode three also seems too early, so we’re left with four (+450) or five (-650).

With no value offered in five, we’re leaning towards four. Capping that episode with Cersei’s death would tee up the last two nicely, and give her send-off its due.

People will also be expecting her to meet her demise in the last two episodes, so it still leaves the series a trick or two up its sleeve.

Bet: Episode 3 or 4 (+450)
