  • This year marks the first iteration of the Fortnite World Cup
  • The esports championship will deliver best players in both solo and duo categories
  • After many elimination rounds, the finals will wrap up the competition on July 26th and July 27th

There’s nothing new about online gaming turning benign hobbies into competitions with real cash prizes at the end. We’ve seen other video games reach mass appeal in the realms of competitive eGaming competition such as Super Smash Brothers, Halo, and Call of Duty.

Each of these has contributed to eGaming as a massive industry with players becoming professionals (and rich ones at that) in their field. Fortnite is the newest game to join the ranks.

This year sees the inaugural Fortnite World Cup, a tournament held by Epic Games. The competition began at the end of April, with online qualifiers from across the globe vying for cash prizes and the glory of coming out on top. With the tournament wrapping up at the end of July, it’s time to look at who will reign supreme.

With $40 million in prize money on the line, this isn’t kid’s stuff, it’s big business.

On the outside, it may seem Fortnite is a cute little game with floating unicorns and pastel-colored llama characters. While it is that, it’s also a survival and battle-mode game with every player for themselves. This is where the worldwide competition comes in.

With nearly 11 million YouTuber subscribers to his credit, Tfue has made a name for himself in the online gaming community.

Given the twenty-five players hoping to place first in the tournament, American YouTuber and modern gaming icon Turner “Tfue” Tenney is speculated as a top contender. With nearly 11 million YouTuber subscribers to his credit, Tfue has made a name for himself in the online gaming community.

He’s also crushing the competition in the Fortnite World Cup so far. Fans who watch the competition live on gaming streaming platform Twitch were on the edge of their seats as Tfue pulled out a unique maneuver to bulldoze the competition (almost) literally.

In a unique twist, Tfue ran over the competition with a Quadcrasher after crafting a ramp to elevate himself with. It’s not everyday Fortnite sees such elaborate acts of destruction, but this is the stuff champions are made of.

Certainly, there are plenty of other players who could come for Tfue’s lead spot, and with a few weeks to go before the finals, anything could happen. Other players may use this time to independently come up with their own respective tricks, but that just means Tfue has more time to craft his own as well.

Pick: Tfue (+1500)

The duos category is even more unpredictable given you have to consider both players’ gaming performance. If even one half of the pair under performs or pulls a wrong move, their partner pays for it in a collective elimination. Tfue may be a star in the solo category, but may not have a chance here.

Fortnite has been known everywhere from schoolyards to living rooms and beyond as a game that has helped socialize gamers. So this competition is fun to watch through the lens of social dynamics.

This competition is fun to watch through the lens of social dynamics.

Around the world, we have pairs of players who are not even occupying the same physical space but bonding over the same love of staring at a screen and destroying others in the same boat.

The ones to watch here are Thomas “Tschinken” Hörak and Klaus “Stompy” Konstanzer. Despite Fortnite being a random number generator (RNG) game where chance and luck contribute to the overall gameplay, the duo consistently play for the win.

Tschinken and Stompy continue to be winners in the Fortnite circuit, first pairing up in June of last year. A year is not a very long tenure in most careers, but clearly this dynamic duo has managed to make the most of their time together.

Frequently besting other teams and keeping their eyes on the prize, it’s likely going to be this team to take home the gold (and the glory) when the Fortnite World Cup wraps up at the end of July.

For anyone who worries about their children staring at the screen mindlessly playing video games wondering if they’ll ever have a real job or friends, take a look at Tschinken and Stompy– friends who may be well on their way to a six or seven figure prize.

Pick: Tschinken/Stompy (+750)
