  • NAVI is the favorite after they took down FaZe in the semifinals

The field that started with 24 teams is down to the final two, as G2 Esports and NAVI are the last teams standing. The best-of-five Grand Final takes place on July 18th, with the winner taking home the grand prize of $400,000 USD.

After seeing the world #1 in Gambit crash out in the quarterfinals, Natus Vincere now enters the Grand Finals as the favorites over G2.

G2 Esports

After consistently finishing in third over their last few events, G2 has broken that streak and find themselves in the top two of IEM Cologne.  The road to the final has been far from easy, but G2 has managed to come out on top in a series of clutch situations. There’s no better example than in their match against Gambit, where NiKo clutched out the 30th round of map 3 to win the match rather than go into overtime.

In the semifinal against Astralis, it was more of the same. After splitting the first two maps, the best-of-3 finale was on Inferno and it took G2 all 30 rounds to edge out the win. Tied at 14 rounds a piece, G2 clutched out the final two rounds to advance to the Grand Final. The beauty of this G2 roster is that there’s firepower from top to bottom. AmaNEk went from bottom fragging against BIG, to top fragging against Astralis in the semis. This team doesn’t rely on any single member and that makes them a dangerous squad.

G2’s road to the final includes consecutive wins over Complexity, BIG, Gambit and Astralis. Of those matches, three of them went to a third and final match, so expect the Grand Final to be a long and scrappy series. Especially with how G2 has been performing on maps like Inferno and Mirage. It won’t be an easy final for G2, but there’s no denying their improvement.

Natus Vincere

FaZe has put together an incredible run at IEM Cologne, but their Cinderella run has finally come to an end in the semifinals. Despite having their most impressive tournament run of 2021, it’s Natus Vincere that is heading to the Grand Final against G2. It’s no surprise to see NAVI sitting amongst the final two teams. The current world #2 might be on their way to the top of that list after Gambit’s early exit at IEM Cologne.

NAVI started their year with a couple of wins at BLAST and are now trying to add an IEM Cologne trophy. NAVI also broke a 4 match losing streak to Gambit by reverse sweeping them in the Grand Final of StarLadder CIS. Their road at IEM Cologne has been stressful as they lost the opening map in their first two matches in Group B. After overcoming the one map deficit to beat Renegades and Vitality, NAVI then took down Astralis and FaZe.

One of NAVI’s strengths is their ability to bounce back and that holds true in a best-of-five. Of course, G2 will also have to somehow deal with s1mple who put up 89 kills and a +41 KD against Astralis. He also showed up in a major way against FaZe and especially in the opening map with 32 kills. As well as G2 has played at IEM Cologne, NAVI is the stronger of the two teams and they’re where I’d place my bet. However, with how scrappy G2 has been, this best-of-five could very well go the distance.

Pick: NAVI (-250 ), O 4.5 (+160)
