An Unlikely Playoff Run

Due to their fifth-place Regular Season placing and the gauntlet style format of the LPL Playoffs, FunPlus Phoenix started their playoff run in the round of eight. After a predictable win over Rare Atom, FunPlus Phoenix’s road to the Final was still long and difficult.

They were able to take down the streaking JD Gaming 3-1 and then shocked the LPL with a 3-0 sweep over Royal Never Give Up. Regardless of their regular-season finish, FPX has leveled up in the playoffs and took down the favorites in RNG to stay in the upper bracket.

To make FPX seem even more unstoppable, they then defeated EDward Gaming in a close best-of-five that went the distance. Undoubtedly, part of FPX’s resurgence is due to the return of ‘Tian’. He had to move to an inactive position due to health issues during the Regular Season.

Since his return, FPX has proved that they can beat absolutely anyone in the LPL. FunPlus Phoenix’s success shouldn’t solely be attributed to ‘Tian’. The team has played well around him with ‘LWX’, ‘Doinb’, and ‘Nuguri’ all winning game MVPs alongside ‘Tian’.

No Longer the Favorites

Entering the playoffs, Royal Never Give Up were viewed as the favorites after finishing the Regular Season with a stellar 14-2 record. Not to mention, they are listed at +600 in the League of Legends World Championship odds.

As the number one seed, RNG skipped straight to the Upper Bracket Round 1. However, their upper bracket run was short lived thanks to that aforementioned 3-0 loss to FPX. It was a real shock to see the tournament favorites swept aside in such a quick fashion, but since then RNG has rebounded to get back to the finals.

It hasn’t been without stress though. RNG defeated Top Esports and EDward Gaming, and both times it came down to the do-or-die game five. Royal Never Give Up has bounced back from their shocking  loss to FPX, but even with back-to-back playoff wins, you have to question how they match up against Fun Plus Phoenix. Their first match was decided largely by ‘Tian’s’ early game pacing, and this time it’ll all be about adaptations. What strategies have RNG developed to handle ‘Tian’ and the rest of FPX?

RNG should have some new picks and game plans in place to give them a better chance this time around. Regardless, FPX is playing their best League of Legends of the year, and I’d bet on them even as the -223 favorites.

Pick: FunPlus Phoenix (-223), U 4.5 (-250)
