With the PGA Tour and all its governing bodies shutting down events until at least May due to the coronavirus outbreak, Augusta National has followed suit and postponed the Masters tournament until further notice.
Postpone is the operative word here, as opposed to cancel, because the organizing committee obviously would love to have their event go on as planned at some point, with October looking extremely likely.
The Masters was shaping up to be a doozy, with Rory McIlroy playing spectacular golf in recent months and likely headed down Magnolia Lane in fine form searching for the career grand slam as the betting favorite.
If you read the tea leaves, it appears he’ll get that chance towards the end of the calendar year.
Odds on When 2020 Masters Takes Place

October or later in 2020 | -140 |
September | +500 |
August | +750 |
July or earlier in 2020 | +900 |
Does not take place in 2020 | +275 |

October Most Likely Masters Date
Each year Augusta National Golf Club typically closes down from May to October when the rye overseed grass catches, so there’s no golf for the members for nearly half of the year.
Of course, that is also because the Masters is played every April.
Statement from Chairman Ridley:
"Considering the latest information and expert analysis, we have decided at this time to postpone @TheMasters, @anwagolf and @DriveChipPutt National Finals."

You can be assured that the club will do everything in their power to host the tournament this year, with Masters week annually bringing in an estimated $120 million dollars for the Augusta community.
A strong potential clue regarding the plans can be noted in just how expensive hotels in the nearby area are expected to be in early October.
Increased October hotel prices fueled plenty of speculation about a fall Masters… https://t.co/7S8tfGF1Rp

Different hotels around the town range from approximately $50 to $150 per night in all the weeks that don’t include the Masters. However, those same hotels are ranging between $450 and $1000 for the month of October. While there has been no official word of the Masters playing in October, given the state of world affairs, that should be a pretty strong indicator that they’re hoping to do it then.
Is it Even Worth Betting on Any Other Month?
The PGA Championship has also been postponed from its May time slot, with the US Open in June, Open Championship in July and the Olympic golf also scheduled for the end of July into August.
It stands to reason that with more major tournaments being pushed back, that July or August for the Masters doesn’t seem feasible.
The only other wager realistically worth making, if you’re a sadist person, would be for it to not be played at all in 2020 (+275 odds). But why would you bet on misery for it to not being contested at all this year? The best bet here is simple.
Pick: Masters to be contested October or later in 2020 (-140)
