After Scottie Scheffler captured his second straight WM Phoenix Open title, the worlds best head to famed Riviera Country Club for the Genesis Invitational. This tournament is yet another elevated event on the calendar, which sees the winner take home a cool $3.6 million. 23 of the top 25 in the world are teeing it up, along with the top-30 on the FedEx Cup list.

This event is hosted by Tiger Woods, and he’ll be playing as well, which is his first official tournament since last year’s Open Championship. It also marks his first non-major start since the 2020 Zozo Championship, and he goes off as a +10000 longshot. Joaquin Niemann is the defending champion, but he won’t compete as he’s on the LIV tour. Jon Rahm is the better favorite after he finished third in the desert on Sunday.

This field is stacked, with Scottie Scheffler back to #1 in the world following his victory in Phoenix. Jon Rahm, who has three wins in his last six worldwide starts, is favorite at +750. Scheffler and Rory McIlroy are tied for the second shortest odds – Rory had a middling T-32 result last weekend.

Justin Thomas Coming Off Solid Event

Justin Thomas performs best when the stakes are higher. Last week at the Phoenix Open, he rebounded from a so-so start to wind up in a solo fourth position. He gained a whopping twelve strokes over the field tee-to-green for the event. He’s had some really strong finishes at Riviera in the past, mixed in with some disappointing results. His last five spins around the Genesis he has two missed cuts, but also a runner-up (2019), sixth last year and T-9th in 2018.

JT sports longer odds than the top-three golfers on the board at +1400, so you’re getting some value on him. Given his solid play coming into this week, and three-top tens here in his last five attempts, he’s definitely someone to consider.

2023 Genesis Invitational Picks and Value Bets

  1. Collin Morikawa (+2000): Last season, Collin Morikawa very nearly won this championship after a sizzling final round. He wound up in a tie for second, just two behind the eventual champ Joaquin Niemann. Before an uncharacteristic missed cut at the WM Phoenix Open, he was third at the Farmers Insurance Open, and runner-up at the Sentry TOC, where he led before a tough back nine dropped him to second. Morikawa is first in ball striking the last twelve rounds.
  2. Jason Day (+4000): Jason Day has experienced a career renaissance this season, posting seven top-25’s in his last eight events. That includes a T-7th at Torrey Pines and a fifth place showing at the WM Phoenix Open. In his last twelve rounds Day finds himself second in total strokes gained and putting.
  3. Adam Scott (+5000): Adam Scott has won twice at Riviera, including in 2020. In the last 24 rounds at this track, he’s tops in total strokes gained and third in putting. He’s also posted a pair of runner-ups here and was T-4th last year, making him an intriguing option in the top 5/10/20 markets.
