After Justin Rose won the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am that concluded on Monday, the world’s best head to Phoenix, Arizona for the WM Phoenix Open. This tournament is known for its raucous crowds, specifically at the wild party that is the par 3, 16th hole. This year, it’s the first tournament in the new PGA Tour ‘elevated’ events series. That has led to eight of the top-ten players teeing it up for the huge $3.6 million dollar winning prize.

Scottie Scheffler is the defending champion. He’s up against top-notch golfers that are coming in with a scintillating form, namely Jon Rahm and Rory Mcilroy, who are the co-favorites for this event.

This field is stacked, with Will Zalatoris the lone top-25 eligible golfer not competing for the $3.6 million winner’s share, which is up from just shy of $1.5M last year. Jon Rahm, who has three wins in his last five worldwide starts, is +800. Rory McIlroy, who is coming off his Hero Dubai Desert Classic victory, is a co-favorite with the Spaniard.

Xander Schauffele Excels At Scottsdale

Xander Schauffele has played this event five times and has very nearly come away with the trophy the last two occasions. In 2021, he was the 54-hole leader, before he eventually ended up in a tie for second place. Then, last year, he wound up tied for third, a shot out of the Scottie Scheffler-Patrick Cantlay playoff. Subsequently, the X-Man’s stats around TPC Scottsdale have been phenomenal.

1 1 2 3 5 34

In the five all-time appearances at this championship, he’s posted at least a top-20 on every occasion. His first two completed tournaments of 2023 have yielded T-3 and T-13 results. He racked up three wins last season, and at +1400, he sports decent value to get back into the winner’s circle.

2023 WM Phoenix Open Picks and Value Bets

  1. Viktor Hovland (+3500): Viktor Hovland flirted with contention at Pebble Beach entering the final round, where he wound up in a tied 13th. That was his ninth top-25 result in the last ten times teeing it up. One of those he was crowned champion at the Hero World Challenge late in 2022.
  2. Sam Burns (+4500): Sam Burns is priced with a juicy number given that he has four titles in the last two seasons. In his last 12 rounds, he’s first in strokes gained: putting. While he’s cooled off after a blistering stretch in the middle of last season, grabbing him at this number is awfully appealing.
  3. Keegan Bradley (+6000): In his last six starts, Keegan Bradley has posted three top-10s. Included in that is his fifth PGA Tour title at the Zozo Championship this season. In his last start, Bradley came oh-so-close to adding another trophy to his mantel, as he was the runner-up at Torrey Pines. He led in strokes gained: putting for the week, which is a great sign because that typically has been his bugaboo in the past.
