  • The Wells Fargo Championship from Charlotte, NC tees off Thursday, May 4th
  • Rory McIlroy is the +750 favorite to win over Patrick Cantlay
  • We’ve narrowed down the golfers with the best chance of emerging victorious and provided the best value bets below

One week after Tony Finau picked up his sixth career PGA Tour victory at the Mexico Open at Vidanta, the world’s best converge on Quail Hollow Golf Club. This is a designated event on the calendar, so it’s chock full with star power. The biggest names to pass, however, are the top-two players in the world in Jon Rahm and Scottie Scheffler.

Max Homa won this tournament for the second time in the last three iterations of the Wells Fargo, though last year it was not contested at Quail Hollow Golf Club. The course was being set up for the 2022 Presidents Cup, where Homa won all four of his matches.

Known for its difficult finish tabbed ‘the green mile’ the Wells Fargo Championship is a demanding test of golf. The winner takes home a cool $3.6 million, up from $1.62 M last year.

Xander Schauffele Poised For Victory

After winning three times on the PGA Tour last season, Xander Schauffele has been knocking on the door to get back into the winner’s circle in 2023. He’s fourth in total strokes gained in the last twelve rounds, and fourth in SG: approach for the year. He’s been playing very solidly coming into Quail Hollow.

Xander Schauffele’s Last Five Tournaments

Tournament Result
Zurich Classic T-4th
RBC Heritage 4th
Masters T-10th
WGC-Dell Match Play T-5th
Players Championship T-19th

At +1600 odds to win outright, you’re getting Schauffele at longer odds than the top-three players on the board (McIlroy, Cantlay, Finau). He’s been playing some fantastic golf all season, and it feels inevitable he’ll lift a trophy again very soon.

2023 Wells Fargo Championship Picks and Value Bets

  1. Jason Day (+2500): Former world number one Jason Day has been knocking on the door for a victory in 2023, without getting over the finish line. He’s won here in the past (2018), which was his latest PGA Tour title. He’s sixth in total strokes gained on the campaign, and fourth at this venue in the last twelve rounds. Before a T-39th at the Masters, Day was inside the top-20 for seven straight events (five top-10’s).
  2. Rickie Fowler (+3500): Rickie Fowler is a past champion at this tournament (2012), and he’s also been T-4th in both 2016 and 2019. After a lull in his play, Fowler has bounced back this season with with nine top-20’s (including his last four outings). He’s eighth in strokes gained: approach this season, and will be someone to monitor in the placements markets.
  3. Keith Mitchell (+6000): The last two times Quail Hollow has hosted this tournament, Keith Mitchell has finished T-3rd (2021), and T-8th (2019). In the last twelve rounds at this track, he’s tops in ball striking. Mitchell has posted four top-10’s on the campaign, including a sixth place showing at the Zurich Classic two weeks ago. He’ll be intriguing for a top 10/20 result.
