The only way the Cleveland Guardians (73-65, 33-30 home) are making the playoffs this season is if they win the AL Central. Cleveland took another big step towards accomplishing that goal, by sweeping the Minnesota Twins over the weekend.
The Guardians begin a new week on Monday with a 2.5-game lead atop the division, and will look to pad that number when they face the LA Angels (61-79, 30-39 away). Oddsmakers opened up Cleveland as the favorite, but by not as much as you’d expect given the discrepancy in records between the two clubs.

Los Angeles vs Cleveland Probable Pitchers
Judging by their World Series odds, online sportsbooks aren’t taking Cleveland all that seriously. The Guardians boast a +5500 price tag in that market, which is longer than nine other playoff hopefuls. They’ll give the ball to Konnor Pilkington on Monday, who was just recently recalled from AAA Columbus.
Konnor Pilkington managed to somehow give up no runs that inning despite throwing only 12 strikes in 29 pitches and walking the bases loaded.

The 24-year-old has made 13 previous appearances for the Guardians this season, including nine starts. The results have been mixed, as he’s found a way to limit the damage despite battling serious control issues.
Pilkington has an ugly 1.61 WHIP through 47 innings, and has issued 27 free passes. Opposing hitters are batting .261 off him, while he’s failed to make it out of the 6th inning in any of his starts.
Demers vs Pilkington Stats
5-5 | Record | 1-2 |
3.67 | ERA | 3.99 |
1.19 | WHIP | 1.61 |
.224 | OBA | .261 |
2.6 | SO/W Ratio | 1.5 |
The Angels will counter with lefty Reid Demers. The 23-year-old is fresh off one of his shortest outings of the season, lasting just 4.1 innings against the Astros. He surrendered seven hits and four runs, marking the second time in three starts he’s been tagged for at least that many runs.
Demers did pitch very well in his lone appearance against Cleveland this season, holding them to two hits and one run in 5 innings of work. That’s a far cry from what happened the first time he faced them last season, when he was pulled in the 4th inning of a 5-1 defeat.
Angels vs Guardians Betting Analysis
Guardians batters own a .308 career average against Demers and a .973 OPS. Jose Ramirez is 2-for-4 versus the southpaw with a home run, while Cleveland is fresh off a weekend where they crossed the plate 17 times.

Andres Gimenez added to his career-high home run total with his 16th blast on Sunday, and now boasts an .847 OPS. He and Ramirez are the only two Guardians hitters with an OPS north of .800, while the duo plus Josh Naylor are the only ones with at least 16 dingers.
Cleveland is far from an offensive juggernaut, but they are trending up. Over the last seven days they’re slashing .276/.346/.380, which dwarfs their season long stats.
LA also enters play with signs of life from their offense. The Angels have put up 32 runs in their last six contests, while Mike Trout has homered in a franchise record six straight games.

Trout was given the day off on Sunday, but the reigning champion in the AL MVP odds Shohei Ohtani continued his fine season with his 34th home run. The duo have combined for 68 homers this season, which ranks near the top of the league for two teammates.

Angels vs Guardians Pick
Normally it’s prudent to target unders in Cleveland games, as their contests have produced the fourth fewest overs in MLB this season. However, in this case I think we can expect offensive fireworks.
Both lineups are exceeding expectations at the moment, while neither starting pitcher is in tip top form. If you like over 8 runs act quickly, because this line could be on the move. As of Sunday night, 79% of the over/under bets and 68% of the money that’s been wagered on the total is backing the over.
