Injury Updates
The Mariners have been hit by the injury bug as April turns to May. Marco Gonzales, the ace of the Seattle pitching staff, was placed on the 10-day injured list with a left forearm strain. Right-hander Domingo Tapia was recalled from Seattle’s alternate spring training site.
#Mariners RF Mitch Haniger hit a 434-foot home run tonight, tied for the eighth longest of his career.

Catcher Jacob Nottingham was claimed on waivers from the Milwaukee Brewers. On a positive note, rightfielder Mitch Haniger returned to the Seattle lineup for Friday’s series opener against the Angels. He missed two games due to fatigue.
The Angels are listing centerfielder Juan Lagares (calf) as questionable.
The Caning Of Canning
It’s been a rough go of late for Angels right-hander Griffin Canning. He’s 1-2 on the season with an 8.40 ERA, and over his last two starts has hit the showers early in each contest.

Teams tend to get to Canning early. Both his first (18.00) and third (15.43) inning ERAs have been atrocious this season. He’s surrendered two home runs during each inning this season.
Though he’s never figured in a career decision against Seattle, Canning has pitched well over his career against the Mariners. He’s posted a 2.08 ERA in two starts covering 13 innings of work. Canning has held Seattle hitters to a .190 batting average.
Newsome’s Fresh Start
An injury to Seattle starting pitcher Nick Margevicius is leading to a change in roles for Ljay Newsome. He’ll be shifting from long relief to make his first start of the season against the Angels.
Two scoreless innings from Ljay Newsome. Got into a little situation with a leadoff double to J.D. Martinez, worked his way out of it with this punchout of Renfroe, and a rare display of emotion from the reserved Newsome. pic.twitter.com/EWNN7TSgZU

He’s filled his prior role with aplomb. The right-hander is 1-0 with a 1.69 ERA and 11 strikeouts through 10.2 innings. In his last appearance against the Boston Red Sox, Newsome threw four innings of scoreless relief.
