The Oakland Athletics (56-45, 26-21 away) visit the San Diego Padres (58-44, 33-19 home) on Wednesday night, with first-pitch scheduled for 7:10 pm ET at Petco Park. This is just the second meeting between these two teams since last September, with the Padres making a trip to Oakland for another two-game series next week.

Hard-throwing lefty Sean Manaea makes the start for the visiting A’s, while Blake Snell will be looking to build off a solid outing last time out.

Probable Pitchers

Manaea has been very impressive for Oakland this season. He leads the rotation with a 3.16 ERA while going 7-6. In 116.2 innings of work, the left-hander has struck out 128 batters.

However, Manaea has been touched up a bit lately. He’s surrendered 11 runs in his last four starts but he is coming off seven innings of one-run baseball against the Mariners last Thursday. In the process, the 29-year-old racked up a season-high 13 K’s in Seattle and will be tasked with a very tough Padres lineup on Wednesday. They’re hitting just .197 as a whole off Manaea, though.

Manaea vs Snell

Sean Manaea
VS
Blake Snell
7-6 Record 4-3
3.16 ERA 4.93
116.2 Innings Pitched 80.1
128 SO 104
28 BB 50

It hasn’t been a typical year for former Cy Young-winner Blake Snell. He currently has a 4.93 ERA in 18 starts and is walking batters at an alarming rate. He’s given up 50 free passes in just 80.1 innings, which has certainly hurt his production this season.

Snell has looked better lately, though. His last appearance was a six-inning, one-run performance against the Marlins where he sat down eight hitters via strikeout. The 28-year-old also allowed only three walks in that game, which is definitely an improvement.

There’s also huge reason for optimism heading into Wednesday. In seven starts at Petco in 2021, Snell has a stellar 1.43 ERA. He has been utterly dominant in front of the San Diego faithful, with opposing lineups slugging only .167. On top of that, basically no one on the A’s has much of a track record when Snell is on the bump.

Batting Average vs Starting Pitchers

Athletics Batters Batting Average vs Snell Padres Batters Batting Average vs Manaea
Elvis Andrus .333 Jake Cronenworth .000
Mark Canha .000 Trent Grisham .500
Matt Chapman .000 Eric Hosmer .143
Tony Kemp .250 Manny Machado .500
Jed Lowrie .250 Jorge Mateo .000
Mitch Moreland .000 Wil Myers .000
Matt Olson .000 Austin Nola .333
Stephen Piscotty .000 Fernando Tatis Jr .000
Jurickson Profar .294

The bats haven’t necessarily been a strong suit for the A’s this season. They’re 23rd in the bigs with a team average of just .233 while scoring only 4.4 runs per game. Home runs have been a key source of offense for Oakland, with first baseman Matt Olson leading the way. He’s slugged 27 long balls, with six others at 11 or more bombs in 2021.

San Diego on the other hand is full of electric bats. They’re in the top ten in almost every major offensive category, with phenom Fernando Tatis Jr leading the way. He’s hitting .289 with 30 homers while also swiping 23 bags.

In fact, the Padres are the top dog in the big leagues when it comes to stealing bases. Manny Machado is also doing his part, slashing .275 with 17 home runs.

San Diego also just added another punch to their lineup after acquiring All-Star Adam Frazier from the Pirates, who is in the midst of a fantastic campaign. On both sides of the ball, the Padres are a very fundamentally sound ballclub.

Athletics vs Padres Prediction

With two quality arms on the mound, I don’t expect a lot of runs to be scored here. The Padres are great at home, but the A’s also have a respectable record on the road.

Snell, as mentioned above, is lights out when pitching at Petco. But, in day games, he has a 7.40 ERA in six starts. Manaea however, boasts a 2.94 ERA away from Oakland and typically pitches well in day games (3.79 ERA).

With this in mind, I’m taking the A’s to win Wednesday’s series finale.

Pick: Oakland Athletics (+130), Under 8 Runs (+100)
