The Atlanta Braves will look to add to their lead in the National League East when they visit the San Diego Padres on Friday night at Petco Park.

The regularly scheduled game is at 10:10 pm ET. However, the teams will first complete a game suspended July 19 in Atlanta with the Padres leading 5-4 in the fifth inning.

The Braves (80-71) hold a two-game lead over the Philadelphia Phillies in the division race with 11 games to play. Atlanta’s four-game winning streak ended Thursday with a 6-4 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks in Phoenix.

The Padres (77-75) broke their five-game losing streak Thursday with a 7-6 victory over the San Francisco Giants in 10 innings at home. San Diego is six games behind the St. Louis Cardinals for the second NL wild card with 10 games remaining but are favored on Friday.

Probable Pitchers

The Braves will start Max Fried (12-7, 3.31). Pierce Johnson (3-3, 3.13) is expected to start a bullpen game for the Padres.

Fried has gone nine starts since his last loss on July 28 at the New York Mets. He is 5-0 in that span with a 1.71 ERA.

Max Fried vs Pierce Johnson Stats

Pierce Johnson
12-7 Record 3-3
3.31 ERA 3.13
3.72 xERA 3.46
1.15 WHIP 1.24
3.61 SO/W 3.04

Fried is coming off one of his best performances of the season Sunday as he shut out the Giants on three hits over seven innings in a win at San Francisco. He had five strikeouts and one walk.

That extended Fried’s streak of quality starts to 10 in a row, and he has 17 in 26 outings for the season. The Braves have a 16-10 record when he starts.

Fried is 6-4 with a 3.53 ERA on the road and has a 7-6 record at night with a 3.25 ERA in 17 starts.

This will be Fried’s second career start against the Giants. He beat them in Atlanta in 2019, allowing one run in seven innings.

Johnson will be making his third start in 60 games this season. Each of his two appearances as an opener have lasted one inning.

Johnson has been scored on in four of his last six appearances, allowing five runs in seven innings. He is 3-1 with a 1.82 ERA in 27 home games and 3-2 with a 2.87 ERA in 41 night games.

Johnson has no career decisions against the Giants. He has yielded one run in 6.2 innings against them this season and one run in nine innings lifetime.

One Hit a Big One

Neither starting pitcher has much history against their opponent but Padres’ third baseman Manny Machado’s one hit in six at-bats against Fried is a home run. Machado has also walked twice and struck out twice.

Braves’ third baseman Austin Riley has homered in three straight games and is on a nine-game hitting streak, going 13 for 35 (.371) with four doubles, three homers and eight RBIs. Since the All-Star break, Riley is hitting .333 with 18 home runs in 62 games.

Braves center fielder Adam Duvall is questionable for Friday. He left Thursday’s game with leg fatigue.

Braves vs Padres Pick

The teams split two games from July 20-21 in Atlanta. Padres shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. and Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman were both 3 for 7 with a home run in the series.

The Braves won the season series four straight years from 2016-19, beating the Padres 18 times in 27 meetings.

Fried is one of the hottest pitchers in baseball and he is an underdog against a struggling team. That makes for an easy choice.

The Pick: Braves +105
