Two of the top teams in the National League will battle it out on Friday, September 23rd as the St. Louis Cardinals (88-63, 37-36 away) visit the MLB-best Los Angeles Dodgers (104-46, 54-20 home) at Dodger Stadium for the series opener of a three-game set. The first pitch is scheduled for 10:10 PM ET.
The Cards will hand Jose Quintana the ball here, their trade deadline acquisition. LA counters with Andrew Heaney, who has been dealing lately.

LA leads the season series 2-1 against the Cards and of course, knocked them out in the NL Wild Card game last season.

Cardinals vs Dodgers Probable Pitchers
St. Louis needed more pitching at the deadline and they went out and got Quintana. The veteran lefty has been pitching extremely well as a whole this year, posting a 5-6 record and 3.16 ERA in 29 starts. Since coming to the Cards, he’s 2-1 with a 2.44 ERA in nine outings, allowing just 13 walks in 48 innings.

Quintana is also coming off arguably his best start with St. Louis too, tossing eight shutout innings against the Reds while surrendering a mere two hits. The 33-year-old has a 1.74 ERA vs Los Angeles in two outings in 2022, which is certainly a positive sign ahead of Friday.
Quintana vs Heaney Stats
5-6 | Record | 3-2 |
3.16 | ERA | 2.66 |
151 | Innings Pitched | 61 |
124 | Strikeouts | 92 |
43 | BB | 16 |
Heaney dealt with several injury problems earlier in the campaign, but he’s now healthy and dominating. The 31-year-old is proving exactly why he’ll be a key part of this Dodgers staff come playoff time, going 3-2 with a 2.66 ERA in 13 starts. He’s struck out 92 batters in just 61 innings while giving up only 16 free passes.

September 18th was another quality outing from Heaney, pounding the strike zone and generating a ton of swings and misses. He tossed four innings versus San Francisco, allowing no runs on two hits. Heaney is rather unfamiliar with the Cardinals, making just one career appearance against them, which didn’t go well, surrendering five runs in 3.2 frames.
Cards Locking Up the NL Central
The National League Central is rather poor this season, but St. Louis looks to have the divisional crown in the bag. They’re 7.5 games ahead of the Milwaukee Brewers with a 88-63 record but are just 5-5 in their last 10 contests.

Thursday was a 5-4 win against the Padres, with Brendan Donovan’s grand slam propelling the Cardinals. Jack Flaherty also looked solid on the hill, throwing six innings of three-run baseball. This series in LA will be a very good test for St. Louis with the playoffs quickly approaching.
Dodgers Looking Like World Series Favorites
Once again, Los Angeles is proving they’re the real deal. Dave Roberts’ squad has the best World Series odds at +315 and simply can’t be stopped. More importantly for this series, they’re 54-20 at Dodger Stadium. In a nutshell, the Dodgers simply don’t lose on home soil.

Thursday saw LA secure a comeback win over the Diamondbacks in the bottom of the ninth. Mookie Betts came into pinch hit and played hero, lacing an RBI single to left field to secure the victory. The offense has been quiet lately though and will be looking to break out when St. Louis comes to town.

Cardinals vs Dodgers Pick
LA is struggling to score runs right now and Quintana has a solid track record against them this season. I’m taking the Cardinals on the moneyline here to win the opener on the road.
