The NL West-leading San Francisco Giants (97-53, 48-27 away) take a trip down south to face their divisional foes the San Diego Padres (76-73, 44-31 home) on Tuesday for the series opener of a three-game set. First-pitch is scheduled for 10:10 PM ET at Petco Park. The Giants have the slight edge in the season series, going 7-6. However, San Diego won the previous two matchups last week.
It will be the battle of the aces on the hill, with Kevin Gausman and Joe Musgrove going head to head.

Probable Pitchers
Gausman has been absolutely brilliant for the MLB-best Giants. He’s led the way in their rotation throwing a whopping 175 innings while posting a team-best 2.78 ERA and 14-6 record. It’s truly been a breakout year for the righty, who struggled to find success at the big league level for the first seven seasons of his career.
Kevin Gausman will be moved up to start on regular rest in Tuesday's series opener at San Diego. Logan Webb could be moved up as well. Or he could start Thursday, which might be optimal in terms of spacing out bullpen usage.

Gausman’s fastball has been sitting consistently in the mid-’90s, but the pitch that’s really been the most dominant is the split-finger. Opponents are hitting just .130 off it and he’s racked up 127 of his 208 strikeouts via the offering.
However, the former LSU standout has been surrendering some runs lately. He faced the Padres last week as well, going just five innings and allowing four earned. In fact, Gausman has given up at least three earned runs in each of his previous three outings. The righty has enjoyed success against San Diego in 2021, overall, posting 2.63 ERA in four starts.
Gausman vs Musgrove
14-6 | Record | 11-9 |
2.78 | ERA | 2.99 |
175 | Innings Pitched | 165.2 |
208 | SO | 184 |
48 | BB | 45 |
For a Padres staff that has been hit hard with injuries this season, Musgrove has been extremely consistent. He’s compiled an 11-9 record and 2.99 ERA in 28 starts, also throwing two complete games which included a no-hitter earlier in the year against Texas. The last three outings have been tough tasks for Musgrove, facing the Giants, Dodgers, and Astros. However, he held his own, giving up seven runs combined. In his most recent appearance, the right-hander held San Fran to three earned, but he did give up two home runs.
Congratulations to Joe Musgrove on being named the #Padres 2021 Roberto Clemente award nominee!

The 28-year-old has pitched extremely well at Petco, posting a 2.42 ERA. He has come up against the Giants three times this season but has struggled with a 6.75 ERA. It’s an electric lineup that can do some serious damage therefore Musgrove must be sharp and limit the mistakes because the Padres need any wins they can get right now.

The Giants have easily been the biggest surprise in baseball. They’ve already locked up a playoff spot and have the best record in the majors at 97-53. While they did lose the series finale to the Braves on Sunday 2-0, San Francisco’s offense has been electrifying. The likes of Brandon Crawford, Kris Bryant, and Buster Posey, among others, are extremely reliable, with Bryant proving to be a tremendous addition at the trade deadline. He also sees the ball well off Musgrove, hitting two career homers in 13 at-bats.

The Padres continue to struggle and unfortunately, they just got swept in a crucial series against the Cardinals, who are three games ahead of them for the final Wild Card spot. They’re just 2-8 in their last 10 and San Diego has a tough ending to the season, playing the Braves, Dodgers, then the Giants again after this current series. On a more positive note for Tuesday though, Fernando Tatis has terrorized Gausman this season, batting .455 with two bombs in 11 at-bats.
Giants vs Padres Prediction
Although Musgrove is dominant at home, Gausman has a very good track record against San Diego in 2021. Also, the Padres are in shambles right now and the Giants are playing well. Take the visitors on the moneyline here.
Pick: San Francisco Giants moneyline (+105)
