  • Cleveland has dropped below .500 for the season

The Cleveland Guardians (57-58) continue their series against the New York Mets (49-66) at Progressive Field. New York secured a 6-5 victory in the previous meeting, fueled by three home runs. Cleveland suffered the loss despite tallying 11 hits, hindered by three fielding errors.

First pitch is scheduled for 1:10 PM EST on August 6, 2026, with live broadcast coverage available on SNY and CLEGuardians TV. Entering today’s matchup, the Guardians emerge as slight favorites on the moneyline despite dropping the first two games of the season.

I am evaluating the starting pitching, offensive form, and key betting angles to identify the best value for this interleague clash.

Kalshi
Under 7.5 Runs
51%

I am isolating the Under 7.5 runs as my top overall play. Both New York and Cleveland are hitting exactly .232 on the season. The Under has cashed in 60.0% of the last 10 games for both clubs. I am grabbing the “No” on Over 7.5 runs scored at 51¢ on Kalshi for a better potential payout than traditional sportsbooks.

For a side, I recommend the Guardians on the moneyline. Backing Cleveland at -115 on Caesars presents solid value. New York has struggled to pull off upsets, winning just 29.8% of their games when listed as the underdog (14-33). While the Mets are favored today, Cleveland’s superior bullpen makes them the better fundamental play.

Looking at MLB player props, Francisco Lindor to record 1+ hits is a strong target. Lindor has been finding the barrel consistently. Getting Yes at 69¢ via Kalshi on a productive hitter in a game where his team needs offense is excellent value.

I also like Jared Young Over 0.5 Hits (-137 on Caesars). Young has safely recorded a hit in 67.0% of his recent appearances, logging a hit in four of his last six games. Backing him to record one knock against Cleveland’s staff is a statistically sound pivot.

My best bets for this matchup:

  • Pick: Under 7.5 Runs (51¢ via Kalshi)
  • Pick: Cleveland Guardians Moneyline (-115 on Caesars)
  • Pick: Francisco Lindor 1+ Hits (69¢ via Kalshi)
  • Pick: Jared Young Over 0.5 Hits (-137 on Caesars)

Starting Pitchers & Batter vs Pitcher Stats

Nolan McLean vs Foster Griffin

WHIP1.121.08
FIP3.474.09
K/910.68.1
Opp. BA.209.226

The pitching matchup presents an interesting dynamic. New York is rolling out one of its most reliable arms, while Cleveland turns to Foster Griffin for his Cleveland debut.

The Mets are getting high-level production from Nolan McLean. The right-hander has compiled a 7-7 record alongside a 3.29 ERA and a 1.12 WHIP over 22 starts. McLean’s underlying metrics support his run prevention, showing a 3.47 FIP and 3.34 xFIP. His 10.60 K/9 and .209 opponent batting average make him difficult for opposing offenses to string hits against.

Over his last 10 appearances covering 53.1 innings pitched, McLean has posted a 2.36 ERA while ramping up his strikeout rate to 11.14 K/9. His ability to limit hits, holding batters to a .218 average, has mitigated the impact of his 3.04 BB/9 walk rate in that span.

Griffin had an electric first half en route to an All-Star nod with the upstart Nationals, but Washington capitalized on his value and dealt him to the contending (at least for AL standards) Guardians. Griffin had spent 2023-2025 in Japan before returning stateside.

Batter vs Pitcher Matchups

When reviewing MLB batter vs pitcher stats, the sample sizes remain relatively small across the board.

Bo Bichette stands out as a strong prop target after launching two home runs in just three career at-bats against Griffin. In the opposite dugout, Nathaniel Lowe has logged two extra-base hits and a .500 average in four encounters with McLean.

Conversely, Mets third baseman Brett Baty is searching for his first hit against Griffin, going 0-for-2 with a strikeout in their limited history together. I will use these numbers to inform my daily fantasy lineups and prop betting strategies.

A deep dive into the underlying metrics reveals exactly how these two opponents match up.

Avg. Exit Velocity89.3 mph [19th]87.1 mph [9th]
Team ERA4.07 [6th]3.74 [8th]

The statistics highlight a clash of offensive approaches. New York holds an edge in raw power, boasting an 89.3 mph average exit velocity and averaging 1.20 home runs per road game. The Guardians post 87.1 mph and 0.88 HR/game metrics at Progressive Field.

Cleveland executes small ball more effectively. They hold advantages in batting average (.247 vs .232) and OPS (.709 vs .683). A mismatch exists on the basepaths, where Cleveland swipes 0.98 bases per game compared to New York’s 0.45 mark.

On the mound, Cleveland’s pitching staff holds a 3.74 team ERA compared to New York’s 4.07 ERA.

  • Mets as an Underdog: New York has struggled to pull off upsets this year, winning 29.8% of their games when listed as the underdog (14-33).
  • Mets Catching Odds Recently: Reversing season-long struggles, the Mets boast a 66.7% win rate catching odds over their last 10 games (4-2).
  • Guardians Recent Form: Cleveland has won only 30.0% of their previous 10 matchups (3-7).
  • Guardians as a Favorite: Backing Cleveland as the chalk has yielded a 28.6% win rate over their last 10 games (2-5).
  • Recent Totals: Both the Mets and Guardians have leaned toward lower-scoring games, with the Under cashing in 60.0% of the last 10 games for both clubs.

If you are ready to tail my picks, Start betting at Caesars now. The betting markets have flipped to favor Cleveland (-115) on the moneyline after the Mets had been favored overnight. New York bettors can take the Mets at +105.

Looking toward the run line, Cleveland is laying 1.5 runs with +180 odds, while New York receives 1.5 runs at a -220 premium. This matchup opened as a true pick ’em on the moneyline at -105 for both sides, but early action pushed the line in New York’s favor before the line shifted to Guardians -115.

The total runs market opened at a flat 7.5, with the Over initially favored at -120 and the Under at +100. The total remains at 7.5, but the odds have tightened to -115 on the under and -105 on the over.

Public Betting Splits

Analyzing MLB public betting percentages provides context before placing wagers. New York commands 62.6% of the overall moneyline handle, slightly outpacing their 59.1% ticket share. Because the money and tickets lean the same direction without meeting the 60% threshold on opposite sides, this does not present a sharp vs public divide.

On the run line, Cleveland is drawing 64.9% of the money and 63.0% of the tickets. Bettors are content to pay the premium on Cleveland getting the 1.5 runs rather than laying the runs with New York on the road.

Action on the total heavily favors the Over, which has accumulated 75.3% of the betting tickets and 70.3% of the money. By taking the Under, I am fading a heavy public consensus in a matchup defined by two relatively stagnant offenses.

Injury Report & Betting Impact

Injuries to marquee players on both sides will alter the offensive projections for both clubs today.

For the visiting Mets, the offense is missing outfielder Juan Soto to a left calf strain and corner infielder Mark Vientos to a fractured right hand. Soto’s absence is particularly damaging, as it robs the Mets of their most patient hitter.

Without Soto and Vientos to anchor the lineup, the Mets lack the firepower necessary to consistently drive in runs. Opposing pitching staffs can pitch more aggressively to the remaining New York batters. The Mets are also dealing with a depleted bullpen, placing extra pressure on starting pitcher Nolan McLean.

The Guardians are monitoring the status of José Ramírez. The third baseman missed Wednesday’s game due to left wrist inflammation and remains questionable.

Given Cleveland’s reliance on stringing together hits, removing their primary run-producer lowers their offensive ceiling. These injuries strongly reinforce my recommendation of backing the Under 7.5 runs. Both teams are missing the primary catalysts needed to spark a high-scoring game.
