Nothing says spring like Major League Baseball’s Opening Day. The season officially gets underway on Thursday (April 1st) at 1:05 pm ET, and the schedule makers have granted every baseball fan’s wish, by putting out a full 15-game schedule.

11 of the 15 contests are divisional matchups, with Toronto visiting New York being the only game featuring two top-10 contenders in the 2021 World Series odds.

Four teams are shorter than -200 on the moneyline, but no team is as big a moneyline favorite as San Diego.

Padres Big Favorites

The Padres are -235 to beat the Arizona Diamondbacks, which makes sense for a few reasons. Advanced projection systems have San Diego finishing just behind Los Angeles in the NL West, and with the third best record in all of baseball.

Arizona on the other hand, is projected to finish in the bottom-10 in win percentage, after winning just 41.7% of their games last season. The Diamondbacks will give the ball to Madison Bumgarner for the second consecutive season on Opening Day, and are hoping for a better campaign from their $85 million dollar man. The four-time All-Star was 1-4 in 2020, with a 6.48 ERA and 1.44 WHIP.

Bumgarner took the loss in the season opener against the Padres last season, allowing 3 runs and 3 walks in 5.2 innings of work. San Diego will counter with Yu Darvish, who’ll make his first start for the Padres after spending the last three seasons with the Chicago Cubs. The 2020 runner-up for the NL CY Young Award was 8-3 last year, with a 2.01 ERA and 0.96 WHIP.

A High Scoring Affair On Deck

The highest total of the slate also features a pair of NL West teams, as the reigning champion Dodgers will face Colorado at Coors Field. The total of 11 is the only double-digit over/under on the slate, but lofty totals have come to be expected in Colorado. Coors Field has consistently rated out as the most hitter friendly park in baseball, and there’s no reason to expect that to change in 2021.

The Dodgers and Rockies ranked first and 15th respectively in runs scored last season, after each finishing inside the top-nine in 2019. Los Angeles projects as the fifth highest scoring team this season, while no team is projected to allow more runs than the Rockies. Colorado will send German Marquez to the mound, who has a career 5.10 ERA at Coors Field in 50 career starts.

The Dodgers are 121-41 in Clayton Kershaw's last 162 regular-season starts.

LA will counter with three-time Cy Young Award winner Clayton Kershaw, who is 11-5, with a 4.44 ERA in 23 career starts in Colorado.

Mets Own Best Opening Day Record

No team has a higher winning percentage on Opening Day than the New York Mets at .661. New York has won five of its past six season debuts, including a 1-0 victory over Atlanta last year on the strength of 5 shutout innings from Jacob deGrom.

The two-time Cy Young Award winner will square off against three-time Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer when the Mets visit Washington. Not surprisingly, given the elite pitching matchup, this game opened with the lowest total on the slate, and 76% of the money is currently on Under 7 runs.
