  • Madison Bumgarner is a free agent after the 2019 season
  • The “rebuilding” Giants are one of the hottest teams in baseball, going from the second-last in the NL to just 3.5 games out of a playoff spot
  • Bumgarner has a 3.66 ERA in 22 starts with 134 strikeouts in 132.2 innings

The San Francisco Giants’ recent hot streak could not have come at a worse time, in reality. Now in a battle for a Wild-Card spot, the club is hesitating to deal valuable trade chips, first and foremost, Madison Bumgarner.

The current trade-deadline odds in sportsbooks heavily favor the Giants holding onto their longtime ace, with the Red Sox, Yankees, and Astros leading the list of potential trade partners.

What Team Will Madison Bumgarner Play For After The 2019 Trade Deadline?

Which Team Will Bumgarner Be On After July 31? Odds
San Francisco Giants -500
Boston Red Sox +650
New York Yankees +650
Houston Astros +750
Atlanta Braves +1000

Not Trading Bumgarner Doesn’t Make Much Sense for Giants

Trading Bumgarner gives the Giants a chance to get good prospects and fill some of their numerous holes. This team needs outfield help. They need a couple of hitters. They badly need more starting pitching. The list of needs is long, and trading Bumgarner would help cross off one or two.

While the Giants are in the playoff picture, it’s a long shot to think that, even if they do squeak in, they would have any chance to go on a deep October run.

The Giants reportedly do not want to trade Bumgarner now that they are in a playoff race. Betting on the Giants isn’t getting you much money at all, but it’s the safest move right now. Unless the team loses the next four games and finds itself five or six games out of an NL Wild-Card spot, it sure seems they are content with keeping him, which is a huge mistake.

Yankees Need October Bumgarner

While the Yankees are reportedly out of the picture for Bumgarner, I’m not ready just yet to count them out. They have a ton of prospects and young talent, including Clint Frazier. The Giants need outfield help and a deal between the two just makes too much sense to discount.

Bumgarner would give the Yankees the true October ace they are lacking. Their starting rotation has been an absolute disaster of late, and it would be awfully hard to trust CC Sabathia or Masahiro Tanaka in the clutch in the postseason.

Bumgarner is a legend in October. He’s 8-3 with a 2.11 ERA and he’s got three World Series rings. The Yankees haven’t won, or even reached, the Fall Classic since 2009.

Add Bumgarner to New York’s potent lineup and strong bullpen — outside of Aroldis Chapman’s recent struggles — and the Yankees could be on the prowl for championship number 28.

The most bang for your buck is the Yankees at +650.

Best Bet: Yankees (+650)
