The New York Mets officially have their backs up against the wall at home on Saturday night as they head into Game 2 of the NL Wild Card against the San Diego Padres down 1-0 in the series after the visitors chased Max Scherzer in the opener on Friday. The first pitch for Padres vs Mets is scheduled for 7:37 PM ET.

The Mets give the ball to the always reliable Jacob deGrom here, while the Padres counter with left-hander Blake Snell.

The Mets are a clear -182 moneyline favorite. But, San Diego has now won five of their last seven against the NL East runners-up and can book their ticket to the NLDS with a victory on Saturday.

Padres vs Mets Probable Pitchers

Snell is the man to potentially send his team through to the next round after a rather solid regular season. The southpaw made 24 starts, posting a 3.38 ERA and 1.20 WHIP. He struck out 171 in 128 innings while walking 51.

Snell also finished the year on a positive note, giving up just two earned runs in his last four outings. That included two starts where he didn’t allow a single run. However, the former Tampa Bay Ray didn’t pitch all that well versus New York, compiling a 4.00 ERA in two appearances.

8-10 Record 5-4
3.38 ERA 3.08

It was a short campaign for deGrom, who only returned from injury in the middle of the summer. He made 11 total starts, pitching to a 3.08 ERA and 5-4 record. The strikeout numbers were again phenomenal, sitting down 102 in 64.1 innings while giving up a mere eight free passes.

That being said, the veteran comes into this outing in very poor shape. He’s allowed at least three earned in each of his previous four starts. Opponents have also taken him deep six times during that span. He’s yet to face the Padres in 2022.

Padres on The Brink of Advancing

San Diego’s bats really came out to play on Friday evening in Queens. While they ranked 21st in long balls during the season, Bob Melvin’s group scored all seven of their runs via the homer, absolutely terrorizing Scherzer. Josh Bell hit a two-run bomb in the first, followed by HRs from Trent Grisham, Jurickson Profar, and Manny Machado.

On the hill, Yu Darvish twirled a gem. He tossed seven flawless frames, allowing just one run on six hits. The bullpen held it down after he exited, with Robert Suarez and Luis Garcia keeping the Mets at bay. Given the way deGrom has been throwing the baseball, this is an opportune time for the Padres offense to capitalize and keep it rolling right into the division series.

Can The Mets Get it Done?

New York disappointed their fans in Game 1 and Scherzer even departed to a flurry of boos from the Mets faithful. To be honest, though, he just didn’t look like his normal self and it showed, leaving far too many pitches in the heart of the plate. Needless to say, he paid for it.

The Mets had their chances to score more runs, banging out seven hits in total. But, the lineup stranded a total of eight base runners. It’s win or go home on Saturday. They need a stellar outing from deGrom and Pete Alonso and Co. to do some damage at home.

Padres vs Mets Final Pick

I have a hard time believing deGrom is going to pitch badly in this big moment. With the Mets at home, they will get it done and force a Game 3. The offense will show up and the right-hander is going to deal.

Pick: Mets -1.5 (+130)
