The Boston Red Sox (30-30, 13-14 away) will hit the road to face the Cleveland Guardians (27-32, 12-15 home) on Tuesday for the first of a three-game set. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:10 PM ET.

Boston goes with lefty James Paton here, who is making his fifth start after a long time away from the big leagues. Shane Bieber counters for the Guardians.

The Guardians are the betting favorite with -130 moneyline odds. The Red Sox sit at +110. Boston has won three of the last four against Cleveland and took two of three in their first series of 2023 back in April.

Boston vs Cleveland Probable Pitchers

Paxton was essentially dealing with injuries for the last two years, but he’s finally back and pitching half-decent. The Canadian is 1-1 with a 4.26 ERA in four starts, striking out 27 in 19 innings and walking seven. Paxton’s fastball still pops and he’s doing a good job of pounding the strike zone.

After a rough outing on May 24th against the Angels, the veteran bounced back on May 31st with five quality innings versus Cincinnati, allowing just one run on four hits while striking out eight Reds. However, Paxton owns a 5.47 ERA lifetime against Cleveland. Not a great sign.

Paxton vs Bieber Stats

Bieber hasn’t been the same dominant figure as in the past, but he’s still putting up respectable numbers. The former Cy Young winner is 4-3 with a 3.72 ERA in 12 starts, including one complete game. He’s struck out 53 against 21 bases on balls.

That being said, Bieber is coming off easily his worst outing of the year. The Baltimore Orioles shelled him for seven earned runs in four frames. You’d have to expect Bieber to bounce back. His 5.50 ERA against Boston doesn’t exactly bode well, though.

Red Sox on Losing Skid

Boston is not playing great baseball at the moment, having just lost three of four to the Tampa Bay Rays and five of their last seven. Monday was a 4-1 defeat at home to the best team in baseball, with one of the best MLB lineups around failing to produce.

They managed just five hits off Rays ace Shane McClanahan. Brayan Bello actually tossed a gem for Boston but he had basically no run support. In fact, Alex Cora’s squad has only scored five runs across the last three contests.

Pitching Is Carrying Cleveland

The Guardians are not enjoying their season. Sure, the AL Central is wide open because no one is really running away with the division, but the reality is Cleveland is 27-32 and one of the worst offensive clubs in the MLB.

The main bright spot is their pitching. Logan Allen, Bieber, and Tanner Bibee all have solid ERAs, while the bullpen is also rather consistent. The entire staff made their presence felt in the finale against the Twins Sunday, allowing one run in a 2-1 win.
