Tampa Bay vs New York Probable Pitchers
New York started the weekend with a 4.5 game lead over Tampa Bay in the AL East, and that’s where it currently stands after splitting the first two games of this series.
The Yankees, who boast +550 World Series odds, will give the ball to Domingo German on Sunday. German has pitched well versus nearly everyone he’s faced this season with the exception of the Rays. Tampa Bay has pounded 11 hits and scored six times in just 11 innings against him, while German failed to make it out of the 5th inning last Friday when they last met.
Domingo Germán will start tomorrow on short rest and the Yankees will essentially take a bullpen day, Aaron Boone says.

Bettors should expect another short outing from German this time around. With injuries to the New York staff, he’s being trotted out on four day’s rest. That means we should see an extended amount of the banged up Yankees bullpen.
Despite injuries to some of their top relievers, New York’s pen has held the Rays scoreless this series through five innings, yielding only three hits.
Patino vs German Stats
1-1 | Record | 2-3 |
4.34 | ERA | 3.27 |
1.61 | WHIP | 1.15 |
.280 | OBA | .243 |
1.2 | SO/W Ratio | 3.2 |
Tampa Bay meanwhile, will throw Luis Patino to the wolves. The 22-year-old will make his second start since being recalled from the minors against a Yankees team that is starting to get healthy – more on that later.

Patino pitched pretty well in his return to the Big Leagues on Monday, allowing five hits and three runs to the Red Sox over five innings in a 4-3 win. He’s yet to face the Yankees this season, but has performed very well against the Bronx Bombers in the past. Patino has limited New York batters to two runs and six hits over 12 career innings of work.
Rays vs Yankees Betting Analysis
Patino would do well to pitch around AL MVP odds favorite Aaron Judge at all cost. Judge reached base three more times in Saturday’s rout, accomplishing the feat for a seventh-straight contest. He leads the AL with 55 home runs and 120 RBI, and has now reached base three times an MLB-best 41 times in 2022.

The Yankees started Game 2 of this series with seven-straight hits and got homers from Josh Donaldson, who returned Saturday from the paternity list, and Giancarlo Stanton. The latter went deep for the first time since returning from his month long absence due to an Achilles injury. It was his 25th long ball of the season, and he’s now reached that plateau nine times in his career.
The loss snapped Tampa Bay’s four-game winning streak, as they failed to score more than four runs for the seventh time in the last nine games. They’ve scored three or fewer runs in 11 of the 18 meetings with the Yankees this season, and their lineup ranks below league average in most key statistical categories.

Rays vs Yankees Pick
With the Yankees lineup nearly back at full strength, I like them to close out this series with their MLB leading 50th home victory. The biggest bat now missing from the lineup is Anthony Rizzo, but the 30-homer man could rejoin the team on their upcoming road trip.
The Rays have been winning lately on the strength of their pitching, but don’t expect Patino and company to limit the Bronx Bombers again on Sunday. For Tampa Bay to keep this game close they’ll need an offensive explosion, and it just doesn’t seem like it’s in the cards. The Rays have a .202/.274/.321 slash line against New York this season, and if we extrapolated that out for the entire year, they’d be the worst hitting team in baseball.
