Detroit’s Pitching Is a Disaster

Detroit has been outscored 24-1 during their three-game losing streak, and has struggled on the mound all season. They rank 29th in ERA, 28th in WHIP and have produced only 10 quality starts. One of those belongs to Turnbull, who’s actually fared well by Tigers standards in 2021. He’s allowed only four runs in 11 innings, although his only two outings came against Pittsburgh and KC, who aren’t exactly offensive juggernauts.

Turnbull has a career 8-24 record, with a 4.49 ERA, and 0-1 lifetime mark against the Yankees. He’s made just one career start against the Pinstripes, surrendering seven hits and four runs in 5 innings of work.

Yankees Career Stats vs Turnbull

Player AB H HR RBI K AVG.
Mike Ford 2 1 0 0 0 .500
Brett Gardner 2 0 0 0 2 .000
Aaron Judge 3 1 1 2 1 .333
DJ LeMahieu 3 2 0 1 1 .667
Rougned Odor 1 0 0 0 1 .000
Gary Sanchez 1 0 0 0 0 .000
Gleyber Torres 3 1 0 0 2 .333
Tyler Wade 2 1 0 0 1 .500

New York’s bats meanwhile, pounded 15 hits off Tigers pitching on Friday night, including five home runs. Aaron Judge hit his sixth and seventh homer of the season, one of which was a grand slam, while Aaron Hicks, Rougned Odor and Clint Frazier all went deep as well.

The 10 runs was their highest output of the season, and they’ve now won seven of 11 games, after starting the year 5-10.

Taillon Struggling in 2021

New York’s shutout on Friday marked the third time they’ve blanked an opponent this season, but we shouldn’t expect an encore performance on Saturday. That’s because Jameson Taillon has struggled in two of his past three starts, and hasn’t made it past the 5th inning in any of his four outings.

He gave up four runs and five hits over 4 innings last Sunday, and brings a 6.23 ERA and 1.27 WHIP into Saturday’s matchup. He’s 0-1 in one career outing versus Detroit, and that start didn’t last long. He was chased in the 4th inning after surrendering 10 hits and seven runs.

Tigers Career Stats vs Taillon

Player AB H HR RBI K AVG.
Miguel Cabrera 3 2 0 2 0 .667
Jeimer Candelario 3 2 0 0 0 .667
Niko Goodrum 2 0 0 0 2 .000
Robbie Grossman 1 0 0 0 1 .000
JaCoby Jones 2 1 0 1 0 .500
Wilson Ramos 2 0 0 0 2 .000
Victor Reyes 1 0 0 0 0 .000

Detroit’s offense has been quiet lately, scoring two or fewer runs in eight of its past nine games, but a matchup versus Taillon, a pitcher they’ve hit hard in the past, might be exactly what they need to kickstart their bats.

Over and Out

The Tigers are 4-6 in their last 10 games versus the Yankees, but rather than play a side, target the total instead. New York’s offense has come alive recently with five or more runs in three of their past four outings, and two of Taillon’s past three starts have produced double-digit totals.

The Yankees are near the top of MLB in home runs hit, while Detroit has allowed a league leading 38 dingers. Expect New York’s strong hitting to continue against Turnbull, and for the Tigers to do their part against Taillon to help this game clear the 8.5 total.

Pick: Over 8.5 (-110)
