The Minnesota Twins (57-73, 25-39 away) meet with the Detroit Tigers (62-69, 34-32 home) at Comerica Park on Monday in a rescheduled game from July 16th. The first pitch is set for 2:10 pm ET, with Bailey Ober starting for the Twins, while Casey Mize gets the ball for Detroit.
The Tigers have been the more dominant team in this matchup recently, winning five of the last six meetings. However, Minnesota collected four straight victories before that.

Minnesota Twins | -125 | -1.5 (+125) | O 9 (-120) |
Detroit Tigers | +105 | +1.5 (-145) | U 9 (+100) |

Probable Pitchers
Ober will take the hill on Monday for the Twins. He’s been rather effective since his call-up to the big leagues in mid-May, going 1-2 in 15 starts while posting a 4.06 ERA. In the process, the right-hander has struck out 72 hitters in 68.2 innings and walked only 17. The home run has been an issue for Ober though, allowing 14 of them and three in his last four outings.
Bailey Ober's numbers in three starts since he tweaked his slider to add more velocity:
16.1 IP, 3 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 16 K
1.10 ERA— Do-Hyoung Park (@dohyoungpark) August 26, 2021
However, the 26-year-old put together a very respectable performance on August 25th, tossing four frames of scoreless baseball against a very good Boston Red Sox offense. In the month of August alone, Ober has pitched well, compiling a 2.11 ERA in four starts. He has faced Detroit once this season already, but it wasn’t necessarily a great day for him. Ober lasted only 3.1 innings while giving up four runs and two bombs.
Ober vs Mize
1-2 | Record | 7-6 |
4.06 | ERA | 3.55 |
68.2 | Innings Pitched | 129.1 |
72 | SO | 100 |
17 | BB | 38 |
Pitching hasn’t been a strong suit for Detroit in 2021, but Mize has clearly been the ace of their staff. He’s tossed the most innings on the team and also has the best ERA among all starters. The 24-year-old is coming off a fine outing against the St. Louis Cardinals, allowing no runs in five innings while surrendering a mere three hits.
The homer has also been a problem for Mize however, giving up 22 of them. In early August, the Orioles and Red Sox both clubbed three home runs apiece off him, but he’s been better in his last two outings.
Casey Mize said he doesn't want the Tigers season to end.

Mize has faced the Twins once this season already, tossing four frames and surrendering one run. But, the righty has a disappointing 6.89 career ERA vs. Minnesota. The fact that his ERA is north of 4.00 this month isn’t a great sign, either. 51% of his outs come on the ground and it will be important that he keeps the ball down in the zone and follows this trend because Minnesota has tons of power, ranking fourth in the MLB in homers.
Batting Average vs Starting Pitchers
Tigers Hitters | Batting Average vs Ober | Twins Hitters | Batting Average vs Mize |
---|---|---|---|
Akil Badoo | .000 | Luis Arraez | .143 |
Jeimer Candelario | .000 | Willians Astudillo | .000 |
Harold Castro | .500 | Byron Buxton | .000 |
Willi Castro | .000 | Jake Cave | .600 |
Robbie Grossman | .500 | Josh Donaldson | .000 |
Eric Haase | .000 | Ryan Jeffers | .333 |
Jonathan Schoop | .000 | Max Kepler | .143 |
Zack Short | 1.000 | Jorge Polanco | .333 |
— | — | Brent Rooker | .000 |
— | — | Miguel Sano | .000 |
Minnesota is fresh off an impressive series against the NL Central-leading Milwaukee Brewers as they took two out of three. They did lose the finale on Sunday though, 6-2. Josh Donaldson has been a clear bright spot in August at the dish for the Twins, who have the ninth-best team average in the majors. Although the veteran is hitting just .253 on the year, he’s slashing .278 this month and also bats .280 in day games. However, Minny has a 26-32 record in afternoon contests.

The Tigers have now lost two straight after dropping two of three to the Toronto Blue Jays. They’re also just 4-6 in their last 10 games. The offense was scarce in the Jays series, scoring just five runs. But, their pitching did a solid job of limiting the damage, allowing only six runs. Detroit has played pretty well at home in 2021, with Jonathan Schoop hitting .295 at Comerica. They also throw the ball a lot better in front of their fans, compiling a 3.74 ERA.
Twins vs Tigers Prediction
Mize has been one of the Tigers’ most reliable arms this season and I expect him to put together a fine start at home. Minnesota’s road record is not good by any means and Detroit has enjoyed most of the success in this matchup lately. Take the Tigers on the Moneyline.
Pick: Detroit Tigers Monelyline (+105)
