Manziel vs Menery: Who Will Win the Fight?
First and foremost, there is no way to know if someone can or cannot fight. It has little to do with size or athletic skill in other endeavors. It has to do with natural ability, training, experience, and motivation, among other generally unquantifiable factors.
Manziel, his apathetic performance in the NFL aside, was a tremendous athlete. That’s why he won the Heisman Trophy at Texas A&M and why the Browns drafted him in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft.
As easy as it is to lose one’s head and say, “It’s the Browns” in a postmortem of his selection and subsequent induction into the symbolic Bust Hall of Fame, it’s not totally fair. Had the Browns not taken him, another team would have. Stephen Jones and the Cowboys’ football ops had to stop owner Jerry Jones from selecting him. Jerry’s interest was based more on marketing than winning.
Manziel was an excellent player in college, exciting and dynamic. Other teams were interested in his natural talent, his ability to sell tickets, and that he could legitimately play. It just so happened that he didn’t want to put in the time and work to be a good NFL player. And he did get a chance to play.
The Padres drafted him in the 2014 MLB draft in the 28th round. He was a standout shortstop in high school. He’s athletic. But this doesn’t have much to do with the ability to fight.
The key with him is that he was a tremendous athlete. He’s 33 and, given his lack of work ethic when he was getting paid to be a pro athlete, it’s hard to imagine he’s particularly fit right now. The fight may just be a payday, with his trademark indifference a mitigating factor in how seriously he takes it. History shows he’s not bothered about being embarrassed.
As for Bob Menery, he’s 5’7″ and his athletic abilities are completely unknown. He’s much smaller than Manziel.
Has he had any combat training? Does anyone know? He’s made jokes about his training regimen, including claiming to have taken up smoking and quitting several days later so he’d be angry for the fight.
That said, harmless-looking people can sometimes be the most dangerous.
Obviously, the easy pick is Manziel, but he might not take this particularly seriously since he’s never taken much of anything seriously unless it was easy for him. But those who want to roll the dice in a completely unknown situation could pick Menery for a potentially big profit.
