Carter Thrives

Wendell Carter put up a season-high 16 shot attempts in his last game. Celebrating his birthday on Friday, he will be getting plenty of shots up against the Raptors. Carter has enjoyed an uptick in true shooting, usage rate and box plus-minus since the trade which saw him land in Orlando. Just turning 22, a lot of the negativity about Carter’s game has been premature, and there are early signs he will develop with the Magic.

Orlando is facing a Toronto team who are 5-15 since the All-Star break. They rank 21st in opponent scoring percentage at the rim on the season, an area where Carter has shown early improvement with Orlando. The former lottery pick is shooting 75% at the rim since the trade, an increase of 14%.

Carter has scored 14 or more points in six of 10 games after switching teams. When he’s played 28 or more minutes, he’s hit this points over every time. Even with this new-look roster, the Magic can stay relatively competitive against the struggling Raps. Carter should play 30+ minutes if he avoids foul trouble, making the 13.5 over a solid bet.

  • Pick: Wendell Carter over 13.5 points (-108)

Porzingis Shines Against Former Team

Kristaps Porzingis scored 48 points across two games with the Knicks last season. New York is markedly improved in 2020-21, but Porzingis will be just as fiercely motivated to prove a point against his former team. The Latvian has been carefully managed by Dallas this year, though he’s expected to play on Friday night.

He’s shooting 39.8% on 6.2 three-point attempts per game since the All-Star break. Alongside Luka Doncic’s heroics, Porzingis’ production has gone under the radar. He’s scoring 21.5 points per night with great efficiency, and there are games where the two-man game with Doncic looks absolutely un-guardable.

The Knicks are an interesting matchup. Their defense has been awesome this season, but they rank 24th in opponent three-point attempts. Teams have shot well below-average on threes against the Knicks this season.

While that’s helped them pick up wins, it’s generally thought to be down to good fortune as much as it is hustle and good shot contests. Whatever the reasoning, shot contests don’t matter too much when you’re 7’3.

New York prioritize protecting the paint. They are happy to give up threes, opening up the Doncic and Porzingis pick-and-pop game. Although he’s only made three or more threes in five of his last nine, the over on 2.5 threes looks like a great value bet on Friday night.

  • Pick: Kristaps Porzingis over 2.5 threes made (+134)
